This work was commissioned by the "?sterreichische Blasmusikjugend" (Austrian Brass Band Association - Young Musicians).The Aboriginal indigenous people of Australia are among the oldest surviving human cultures. The arrival of the Europeans marked their decline and endangered their existence. The many secrets the Aborigines hold served as inspiration for this work. Aboriginal SpiritOver many centuries, the Aboriginal people have cultivated a unique ability to live in harmony with the world around them. Maintaining the deli?cate balance between their trinity - nature, man, and creation - is an important factor for bliss and happiness.Primeval Sound and Dreamtime The tens of thousands-year-old stories from the era called Dreamtime - the Aborigines' creation myth - play an important role in not only their be?liefs, but their everyday lives and laws as well. Ancestral worship and various other rituals and ceremonies are still held in high regard to this very day.Running HunterThe Aborigines are extremely skilful hunters and are able to run for extended periods of time when chasing their prey. Hunting weapons, such as the boomerang, exemplify their abilities.Uluru (Red Rock)Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a natural sandstone "inselberg" rising 348m above Australia's plains, and is one of the country's most recognisable icons. Uluru is also a sacred place for the local Aborigines. Its history stretches back to Dreamtime, although it did not exist in its current state at that time.Encounter with the White MenUnfortunately, the "White Men" did not realize the significance and importance of the Aborigines and their culture until the end of the 20th century. Before then, they were unaware that the Aborigines were quite possibly one of the oldest known cultures on earth, with a seamless history stretching back to creation itself; Dreamtime. BushfireFire has been present on the Australian continent for millions of years. Many of the indigenous flora and fauna have needed to adapt to fire, and evolution has led to unique solutions for survival. Suite Marchigiana (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
According to a famous statement by Herder, folk songs represent the archives of a nation's knowledge, the expression of its heart and theimage that reflects its history and identity. Suite Marchigiana is a three movement piece, inspired by folk songs from the Marche in central Italy, a region with a very ancient and rich folkloristic heritage. The first movement elaborates on the well-known Pasquella. The Pasquella comes from a traditional winter begging ritual where a group of musicians go from house to house singing verses, wishing their audience good health, wealth and abundance, in return for small amounts of money, food and wine. The second movement is an Andante Triste inspired by an old song called Sona la mezzanotte (The Clock Strikes Midnight), a melancholic song that reminds us of unhappy love stories, bereavement, and so on. Luciano Feliciani concludes the suite with the Saltarello Marchigiano, which is bright and sparkling, and therefore in complete contrast with the previous movement. Although unproven, the Saltarello is thought to have its origins in the 'saltatio' (a latin dance). While the choreae were group dances, circular in structure and with a rhythmic progression, the saltationes were more lively in character. The fast, frenetic and joyous saltarello was without any doubt the most famous musical expression of rural central Italy in the nineteenth century. 10:20

The Golden Age Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ?Adios espa?oles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed the Republic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of M?nster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years' War. III Rembrandt's Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other's territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing. 0:11:30

TUNES FROM THE TRENCHES (SSA vocal score) - Lawson, Peter
For SSA choir and orchestra or concert band, or choir and piano.A non-stop medley of tunes from World War One from recruiting through to the Last Post. This arrangement can be performed by a choir with either an orchestra, band or piano accompaniment. There are different choral versions available for Mixed Voice Choir - both SATB (GM131) and, for those with a shortage of male voices, SA+Men (GM134) - for Upper Voice Choir (SSA - GM132) and for Male Voice Choir (TTBB - GM133). The orchestra score and parts (GMCP020) can be used either on its own or to accompany a choir.The recruiting song "Your King and Country Want You" starts us off followed by "Goodbye, Dolly Gray" as the soldiers leave for war. "Belgium put the Kibosh on the Kaiser" is followed by some proper trench songs - various lyrics were improvised by the soldiers!! - "Three German Officers crossed the Rhine" and "They were only playing Leap-Frog". "The Bells of Hell go Ting-a-ling-a-ling" leads to strains of "Stille Nacht" recalling the Christmas truce. "When this Lousy War is Over" and "There's no place like Home" are balanced by "Land of Hope and Glory" before the Americans arrive with "The Caissons go Rolling Along" and "Over There". "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" brings us towards a rousing finish save for an optional "Last Post-lude" to end reflectively.

A Tamworth Tapestry was commissioned by the Tamworth Wind Band who gave the first performance in Fazeley, Tamworth, on 27 Apr 2024. In composing it I drew on aspects of Tamworth starting with a short malicious outburst to depict the warlike history of the town's Norman castle. From there the music moves into a slow-flowing minor key movement entitled River Tame. The Celtic derivation of the word Tame means dark and slow-moving. The suite ends with a saltarello - Tomsaete. The Tomsaete were an Anglo-Saxon tribe who lived in the valley of the River Tame and remained around Tamworth throughout the duration of the Kingdom of Mercia. There is also a play on words with the band's conductor - Tom Sears. I combined the saltarello with some allusions to various other Tamworth references including Kingsbury Water Park, Drayton Manor Theme Park, Tamworth Pigs and even a reference to the Robin Reliant!Duration: 6.15

Sing Lullaby, also known as The Infant King, is an arrangement of a Basque Carol. The words were translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) an Anglican priest and folk song collector. The melody was harmonized by the English organist and music editor Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) who included it with other Basque carols (also rendered by Sabine Baring-Gould) in The University Carol Book in 1922. I use a little of Pettman's harmony but also take a different look. I also set it in 3/4 time rather than Pettman's 6/8 (starting with an anacrusis) which allowed me more freedom of expression and a chance to use a few hemiolas in poignant moments. It is a beautiful, tender carol as befits a lullaby though not without a few suspensions which allude to the future trials of the Infant King described in Baring-Gould's words.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15
