Ides March was commissioned by William Brine in 1990, Bermel's first commission. Brine requested that the work be a march suitable for performance at both a wedding and a funeral. Although originally titled Brine's March, when the composer learned that the march was to receive its premiere on 15 March, he changed the title to Ides March in a umorous nod to the Shakespearean admonition 'Beware the Ides of March'; in his youthful view a sentiment appropriate for either a wedding or a funeral. However, a line from Cole Porter was the inspiration behind the major key to minor key interplay of the work: 'What could be any finer? But how strange the change from major to minor, every time we say goodbye', a line that captured the composer's attempt to write a march that did justice to both the melancholy and triumphant. This well-known work was composed in Christiania in 1874 for a burlesque Carnival in Kunstnerforeningen.An early title for the work was Bryllup paa Dovre. The manuscript score and parts at The National Library in Oslo of the early version with this title have much more music than the version printed by C.F. Peters, Leipzig in 1881. The form in this first version was ABA with an additional trio part that later were discarded. In the trio Svendsen used the melody Saeterreisen (Os har gjort kva gjeras skulle) from Lindeman's collection of Norwegian Folk Tunes. (Vol. I/115). In the A-part a wedding tune (Bruraslaatten) from Sogn is used (Lindeman Vol. I/476). The Carnival's literary theme was the connection between the cold north and the warm south. Musically the south is represented in Svendsen's music by Raffaele Sacoo's melody from 1835, Te voglio bene assai.I believe that if Norwegian quality music from this period is going to be performed, it must at least be available. There must be editions for modern instrumentations with full scores. I do this as my contribution to expand and enrich the repertoire for Concert Bands.- Stig Nordhagen

The Shamadan is an old oriental folk dance full of symbolism in which a female dancer, often on the occasion of a wedding, balances a candelabra on her head as a token of spiritual light. In this work, the euphonium takes up the role of the dancer. At the very beginning, the soloist already has the opportunity to shine in an unaccompanied recitative. Next, the soloist and band alternate, and in the course of the work the band also plays an important part with various technical highlights. More variation is created with a solo passage accompanied by percussion and hand claps, culminating beautifully in a grand tutti towards the end of the piece. Challenging music with much to enjoy! £137.99A Little Klezmer Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated in the shtetl (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as klezmorim, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Klezmer is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words kley (instrument) and zemer (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish hazanut (cantorial music) and also the nigunim, the wordless melodies intoned by the Hasidim (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations. Duration: 7.45

Derek Bourgeois wrote this Serenad for his own wedding, to be played by the organist as the guests left the church ceremony. Not wishing his wife and guests to process out in an orderly 2/4, he surprised everyone by starting the piece in 11/8 and in case anyone began to feel too comfortable, he chaged to 13/8 in the middle! The work has now been released in a number of different orchestration and this one for 6 Part Flexible Ensemble will hopefully enable a greater number of ensembles and audiences to enjoy this delightful and popular miniature.
