This suite is based on the fairy tale The Bronze Pig by Hans Christian Andersen.This is a story about a boy who wants to be a painter and a pig made of bronze. This pig, in Florence town square, is a bronze statue with clear water pouring from its mouth. Legend has it that when an innocent child sits on its back, that the pig can run. In three movements; Flying Dreams in a Starlight Sky, La Via Porta Rossa and Twilight on the Arno River this work is a highly descriptive storytelling piece that will be equally enjoyed by young and old alike. Definitely one not to be snorted at!

The composer was inspired by Oyama City's slogan, 'water, green and earth', to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfareleads to a magnificent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.

Dating from the 1600s, the folk song O Waly, Waly (commonly known as The Water is Wide) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-notemotif common to this song and also Carolina (South Caroline's official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestososection for the entire ensemble. A detatchment of native soldiers approach and pass through the village, then a song from a boat on the Nile is heard softly across the water; a short passage depicting an Arab playing his pipe, leads to a repetition of the song-melody. The soldiers return and some of them sing the song in harmony. A few bars of the melody bring the piece to a quiet conclusion.

£140.80Decennium - Eric Swiggers
'Decennium' was composed in 2003 as a commission by the municipality of Berheze for its tenth anniversary. The composition describes the history of this town in the Province of Brabant, consisting of 6 different villages: Heesch, Heeswijk, Dinther, Nistelrode, Loosbroek and Vorstenbosch. The composition starts with a slow introduction, Adagio Misterioso, suggesting the atmosphere in long-ago days when the area consisted mainly of swamps, meres and low woods. (The word 'Bern' is a synonym of 'Born' meaning source or water, whereas 'Hese' is derived from 'Haisjo' meaning brushwood ). Above the dark sounds we hear far away trumpet signals announcing the Middle Ages. After a piercing crescendo, we hear the full sound of festive trumpets. A medieval dance, as was to be heard in the Heeswijk castle, follows. This dance gets a more and more stirring character and finally turns into a merry popular dance ending with a burst of laughter reproduced by descending scales with the muted trombones and trumpets. A slow transition with a quotation from a Gregorian plainsong (Domine Deus) and church bell ringing, referring to the Abbey of Berne, brings us to a romantic Larghetto. This part describes the quiet rural life in a beautiful natural surrounding. The last dying note contrasts with the threatening ostinato, referring to the rise of the industrialization, which provoked quite some resistance with the local people. Once more we hear the 'Domine Deus' but much more powerful this time. When the resistance calms down, the work concludes with an Alla Marcia. The first notes of the main theme could be heard all through the composition and now we hear the complete main theme again. The new town is born. A festive conclusion refers both to the tenth anniversary and the optimism and confidence as to the future.

£183.20Grim - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
Grim was commissioned by Sandviken Ungdomskorps in 1998. Grim is a folkloristic pastiche, but also with a jazz-flavoured inspiration. The piece ends with the folk-music played on top of a theme from a march: "Sandvikguttenes marsj" to salute the band that commissioned the music. The title is taken from the word "grimen", a kind of troll that lives in water. He teaches fiddlers how to play if they offer him food a Thursday night in a north-faced waterfall.
