Mr. Sandman - Pat Ballard
The Emmylou Harris version of Pat Ballard's Mr Sandman was an international hit. In this arrangement Klaas van der Woude shows this song is also perfectly suited for three instrumental soloists (saxophones) with brass band accompaniment. The special close harmony effect is obtained by a tight three-part arrangement of the melody. Effective use of percussion, particularly the vibraphone, gives this version the same feel as the original.

This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups. The allegro is characterised by a quasi-obsessive cadence which depicts a Roman army constantly beating time.

This three-movement symphony musically depicts the history of Hungary. Key historical figures, wars and other important events from this country inspired all three movements. The first movement depicts Atilla, the King of the Huns, and is characterised by fear, threat and aggression. The second movement focuses on rpd, the founder of the Hungarian State and the final movement is named after Istvn, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary. The beautiful theme of the national hymn appears throughout the symphony, however it is often partially hidden. It is used as a "thread," hardly recognizable at the beginning, becoming more and more obvious near the end and itconcludes the symphony as the "final apotheosis," making the band sound like a majestic living organ.

In 1725 J.S. Bach composed the cantata BWV79 'Gott, der Herr, is Sonn' und Schild for the celebration of the Reformation. Originally written for 3 vocal soloists, choir and orchestra Cantata No.79 is partially based on the well known hymn Now Thank We All Our God, the melody of which is attributed to Martin Rinckart. This arrangement for concert band by Robert van Beringen combines part of the first movement (Coro) with and ensemble from the third movement (Choral).

This stately opening work begins in the low register with a broad main theme from the low brass immediately setting the tone. Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live, have lived, and will live in the US town of Algona, who commissioned the work to celebrate it's 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.
