An outgrowth of NBC's 1952 successful tele-documentary Victory at Sea, was Project 20 two years later: a 30-episode series that was scored completely by Robert Russell Bennett. The episode, called Down to the Sea in Ships, utilized this score that initially aired in December of 1968. The magic of the sea, the beauty of ships, and fascination for the men who sail them, are fully explored in this five-movement epic work that relies heavily on sea shanties and folk material. Summer is the second in a series of symphonic poems, inspired by the seasons and the folk music of Scandinavia. In Spring, the composer made use of two Swedish folk tunes, whereas Summer focuses on Finnish folk music. The work opens with an impression of the pastoral landscape of Ostrobothnia, an elongated area on the west coast of Finland. As in Spring, the music continues with a polka, based on the opening bars of Suomis Sang (Song of Finland). After a brief horn interlude, a saxophone quartet plays from behind the stage Ant han dansa med mej (Ant was dancing with me), while the orchestra starts up an ostinato bass line that marks the transition to the finale. A gradual build-up to the 'Sun Theme' from Spring results in a radiant conclusion, with a short quotation from the first Symphony of Jean Sibelius, Finland's musical icon.Duration: 11:30

Der Aufstand (German for 'riot') is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, 'screaming' chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games. Der Aufstand is a noisy antithesis to the celebratory fanfare. Duration: 10.00
