Although written as supplemental material to the Belwin 21st Century Band Method (for use after lesson 8 of Level One), this piece for the holidays can be utilised with any beginning method. The grade level is 1/2-1, the pitch ranges are within an octave from concert low B-flat to A-flat, and the rhythm patterns are limited to whole, dotted half, half, and quarter notes and rests. Three well-known Christmas songs are included in this mini-medley: Adeste Fidelis, Good King Wenceslas, and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Erik Satie, born in Honfleur in Normandy (France) in 1866 is undoubtedly one of the most striking personalities in the history of French music. He composed in various, often quite divergent, styles. Besides light-hearted, entertaining works he also wrote several serious compositions, among which the three ballets: Parade, Rel che and Les Aventures de Mercure. However his piano pieces, such as Trois Gymnopedies or Gnossiennes will remain his most popular compositions. Satie co-operated with almost all great artists of his time: Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Sergej Diaghilev and Georges Braque and the composers Darius Milhaud (Le Groupe des Six) and Claude Debussy. Johan de Meij made an orchestration of three short pieces by Erik Satie: I. Prelude (from: Jack in the Box) II. Reverie (from: Trois petites pieces montees) III. Marche: Le Piccadilly (1904) It was only after Satie's death in 1925 that the manuscript of the piano piece Jack in the Box was recovered. Satie himself thought he had lost the manuscript in a bus. When his flat in Arceuil was cleaned out, a small notebook was discovered behind his piano and it contained the manuscript which was assumed to be lost forever. The R?verie (De l'Enfance de Pantagruel) is an extract from Trois petites pieces montees, originally composed for small symphony orchestra. In this suite it is meant as a restful intermezzo. It is clear that, as with Milhaud (La Creation du Monde) and Debussy (Golliwogg's Cakewalk; Le Petit Negre), it is hard to deny obvious influences of jazz music in Erik Satie's compositions. Le Piccadilly, dating from 1904, displays a lot of similarities with the compositions of Scott Joplin. Duration: 7.00

This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the 'Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare' (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the 'Sint Martinusfanfare' from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. The contrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace', could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.Duration: 13:30

In this four-movement suite, every moment sings of a different type of French wine. All these wines have their origins in the little French village of Savigny-les-Beaune in Burgundy and are made by wine-grower Pierre Guillemot. It was the excellent quality of the wines that inspired Rob Goorhuis into writing this composition. The first three movements deal with three red wines made of the Pinot Noir grape which all bear the Premier Cru designation. The final movement was inspired by a white wine made of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
