Henry Purcell's epitaph in the Westminster Abbey reads "Here lyes Henry Purcell Esqre, who left this Lyfe and is gone to that Blessed Place where only his Harmony can be exceeded." Purcell's setting of this melody composed by Frenchman Louis Bourgeois has been skillfully arranged for concert band by James Curnow. Delightfully characteristic Baroque counterpoint and harmonies form a great style study for your band while being a wonderful performance piece. From the out of tune introduction to the pandemonium which reigns at the close, the Country Band March is a marvelous parody of the realities of performance by a country band. While the main march theme is probably Ives' own, the march features an impressive list of quotations that includes Arkansas Traveler," Battle Cry of Freedom," British Grenadiers," The Girl I Left Behind Me," London Bridge," Marching Through Georgia," Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground," My Old Kentucky Home," Violets," Yankee Doodle," May Day Waltz and Semper Fidelis. There is rarely anything straight-forward about the use of this material: the tunes are subjected to Ives's famous techniques ofpoly-everything. Gustav Holst (Cheltenham, 1874 - London, 1934) was of the very first great British composers of classical music to write some valuable original compositions for symphonic band. Holst composed operas, choral works and splendid compositions for symphony orchestra. He got famous with his opus 32, the seven part suite "The Planets" composed between 1914 and 1917. The first complete public performance was given in 1920. The first part, "Mars, the war bringer" was written just before the outburst of the First World War. Geert Schrijvers wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band, organ and two harps.
