Man in the Ice - Otto M. Schwarz

This programmatic piece of music is one of the best-selling works from Otto M. Schwarz. There was a very high demand for a lower grade version to enable young and small bands to perform this epic piece. On September 19th, 1991, a mummified corpse of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the -tztler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5300 years, with all of his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and provide us today with a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mndel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film, which Otto M. Schwarz used as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic windband and musically resurrect the "Man in the Ice- -tzi".

    Entropy - Hans Offerdal

This piece is about knowledge ('erkenntis') - an urge for, a struggle for, but also a resistance to this knowledge.Premiere performance by Christiania Blseensemble conducted by Trond Korsgrd, at the Norwegian Academy of Music, November Friday the13th, 2015.To the conductor:There are three important parameters in play: order - disorder, agreement - disagreement, and clarity - confusion. This applies to both the horizontal and vertical level. The polyphony is characterized bylines that often develop in spite of the other voices. Dynamics, articulation, accentuation and timbre are essential elements. Indeterminacy is used a few places and explained in the score.

And Still, the Spirit - Philip Sparke

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.

Tortoises (From The Carnival of the Animals) - Camille Saint-Saëns

Tortoises from "The Carnival of the Animals" is a brand new arrangement of this movement from the orchestral suite by Camille Saint-Sens.The slow and goofy turtle is given a hip-hop groove to speed up a bit but also face some competiton by afast rabbit, presented by the woodwind-section.This arrangement let the low brass play a slow, and veiled melody which are going to played a bit slower compared to the accompaniment. For the daredevil conductor, this piece can be akind of a "schizophrenic" exercise where one have to conduct the melody one and a half beat behind the accompaniment and rhythm group.

    Cerebral Vortex - Øyvind Moe

Cerebral Vortex was composed for Musikkforeningen Nidarholm for their participation in the 2009 World Music Contest in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. Tthe first performance was given at this contest conducted by Espen Andersen, with the composer in thesaxophone section. The title is meant to describe a from of writer's block caused not by lack of ideas, but rather a lack of ability to channel and form the madness swirling around inside the head of someone with a great desire to express something. In this respect, the piece can be said to be an exercise in keeping focus from the composer's side. A limited amount of material is repeated and treated to create a development that always has a solid anchor point. This is emphasized by the return to the openingtheme towards the end.

The Battle of the Hats - Øystein Sjøvaag Heimdal

The word svimesltt, which is the title of this piece in Norwegian, has two meanings. One meaning is "knocked out", whilst the other, "sltt", means a folk melody/dance.Svimesltt is one of several folk dances, all of them with humorous titles, originally written by ystein Olsen Vadsten. Norwegian culture is the basis for these dances, both rhythmically and melodically. The accompaniment has brought this funpiece into the 21st Century. When it comes to Svimesltt, it is the traditional dance "halling" that is the inspiration. Halling is a rather wild dance, where the man tries to win the heart of a lady by attempting to kick a hat off a stick, held up in the air. This iswhere "The Battle of the Hats" gets its distinctive name A truly Norwegian tradition. The composer wanted to write a "crazy" melody, which highlights how "knocked out" a man can be by love, as he tries to win the chosen ones heart.

    Kingsfold - Traditional

The haunting melody of this traditional tune likely dates to the Middle Ages, and was published by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams in the 1906 English Hymnal. Freely adapted by Johnnie Vinson in this setting for youngbands, the minor melody is stated first by low clarinets and horns. The next section introduces an original theme, which is then combined with the first melody in the moving final section. Beautifully paced and scored largely inchoral fashion, this is a wonderfully fresh and unique offering for holiday or winter concerts.
