Dating from the 1600's, the folk song O Waly, Waly (commonly known as The Water is Wide) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also "Carolina" (South Carolina's official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavoured Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. This music was composed in 1955 for the film Richard III and has been adapted for orchestral concert use by Muir Mathieson, and this Concert Band arrangement by Paul Noble. The orchestra version has been recorded on Columbia Records by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by the composer, under the title Shakespeare Film Music. Concert Bands will find this music to be quite accessible, with abundant doubling, as was in the original scoring. This piece was commissioned by Matsudo Citizen Wind Orchestra for their 30th anniversary concert and premiered by the band conducted by Kenichiro Hasunuma in July 2009. This piece is typical of Satoshi Yagisawa in that it depicts a magnificent spectacle. This one is set in ancient Egypt and is based on the story depicted in the famous film "The Ten Commandments" (1956, directed by Cecil B. DeMille). One day Moses, who was raised by the rich royal family, found out that he was originally Hebrew. The Hebrews had been forced to live as slaves. Ramses, the prince directly descended from the Pharaoh, envied Moses' strength and popularity. After internal argument Moses decides to deliver the Hebrew from the Pharaoh's tyranny and escape from Egypt with them.The music starts with brilliant royal fanfare and depicts magnificent architecture, the Hebrew people forced into hard labour, and the slaves escaping from the Pharaoh's tyranny. At the climax they are at crisis point, trapped by the sea. Moses waves his staff and the miracle happens; the sea parts and Hebrew people successfully escape. Following on from Perseus - A Hero's Quest in the Heavens, this work Moses and Ramses is another piece written in the dramatic style favoured by Satoshi Yagisawa.Duration: 9:30

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' - from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - was founded in the year 1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society - the third oldest still in existence in the country - celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires the musical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character of Grevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peace and excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The premire, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musical festivities to a close. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!Duration: 11:00

The idea for this work sprang from a visit to Bayeux in the weeks before Christmas in 2001 when carols were being played through loudspeakers in the streets to accompany seasonal shoppers. The overture was premiered by the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2003 and subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The work has been commercially recorded by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Gavin Sutherland. The carols employed in this overture are: Il est n, le divin enfant, Patapan, Nol nouvelet, Quelle est cette odeur agreeable, and Masters in this hall. Some are brought together in the final section with Quittez, pasteurs as additional counterpoint in the horns. This piece will be an important addition to seasonal repertoire, and certainly in a setting that will be fresh and inspiring for audiences.

The famous monolith Uluru (formally known as Ayers Rock) is the one of the attractions in the Northern Territory of Australia. This colossal red rock lies in the middle of a desert plain. At dusk, a beautiful spectacle develops as the setting sun envelops the rock in rose-red hues. There are tourists who used to climb the rock, while this is a taboo according to the indigenous religion of the Aboriginals. Besides, the climb is very strenuous.
