Score & Parts. The fundamental expression of this Scherzo is one of joyful energy. In form, it is a developed rondo, comprising three statements of the main theme (or rather of the main group of themes) and two episodes, together with an introduction, bridge passages and a coda. In each of the three statements of the main group of themes one particular theme appears at the climax, and from it the melodic and rhythmic motifs of the work are all derived. This basic theme is an African melody that has been sung since 1852 by people of African descent in Guiana, South America, in celebration of the abolition of slavery there in that year. Tanczi Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters. 0:13:30

To The Stars! - Nigel Hess
'To the Stars!' is the fruit of a unique collaboration between Nigel Hess and the children of several Bedfordshire schools who were asked to contribute ideas for a libretto based on the themes of space travel and exploration. The work was then performed during a concert at the Royal Albert Hall showcasing the work of Bedfordshire County Music Services. The unusual combination of children's choir and symphonic wind band is wonderfully exciting, and To the Stars! provides an incomparable performing experience for both band and choir, and is also technically demanding and challenging. After a rousing introduction, we hear a countdown to our rocket's 'blast off', and suddenly we are heading out to the planets where we meet aliens with blue eyes and pink ears! After a brief but terrifying skirmish with a black hole we head off to a 'world of many wonders', and as we leave our solar system behind, the piece finishes with a spectacular shout of 'Fly with us - to the stars!'.

The TV Detectives brings together five of Nigel Hess's best-known television themes (Dangerfield, Campion, Wycliffe, Maigret and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates), all originally written for small-screen sleuths in whodunits that have been enjoyed by TV audiences worldwide.Dangerfield is a BBC series about a Warwickshire police surgeon, and originally starred Nigel le Vaillant, before Nigel Havers took over the lead role.
