Ziggurat - Wouter Lenaerts
The Tower of Babel was built in 1563 and is the best-known masterpiece of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1520-1569). The step-like temple tower or ziggurat was an important meeting place for people from different continents and cultures. However, its spiritual meaning is even more important as this tower was considered to be the gate to heaven - the gate dividing two worlds. This work creates a musical connection between these two worlds. As sources of inspiration, the composer used the Luther chorale 'Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein' (Oh God, Look Down from Heaven, 1524), the legendary King Nimrod and the painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder, whose initials form the basis of oneof the themes.

The Wind Rises - Joe Hisaishi
This beautiful, lyrical melody is so colorful in the film, without having an imposing image. "The Wind Rises" (2013) does not dominate the visual, and perhaps is an ideal form of film music considering this is director Miyazaki's final production. Chamber ensembles with solos and strings are frequently used in the soundtrack, so the sound is mellow and soft. As you listen more and more, you still recognize the tradition of Ghibli music.When I arrange, I try not to visualize the image of a film. I may think of characters and story line but is it important to write music that alone is appealing and fascinating. Trying not to "overstate" the film is not needed here. If you can bring out the most appealing parts of the soundtrack, excess can be forgiven. Of course, I have not changed the musical elements of the original.I asked Mr. Tomoki Ubata (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) whom I have worked with numerous times to assist with layout. He came up with a heartwarming medley with two main parts; leading boy Jiro's gift for aeronautical design and his romance with the heroine, Natsuko.The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Nahoko (A Rainbow) Beginning2. Caproni (An Aeronautical Designer's Dream) C3. A Journey (An Encounter at Karuizawa) H4. The Falcon I5. Prototype 8 N6. Jalan-jalan was inspired by the music of Bali, Indonesia based upon its unique melodies, modes and rhythms. As part of the independent archipelago "Ryukyu", Okinawa (southernmost Japan) had an active exchange with Bali that included cultural and musical influences. Jalan-jalan means "walkabout" or "walking journey" in Indonesian. It describes a walk in the so-called Isle of the Gods, encountering Bali's beautiful scenery and daily life. Its four themes include "Dawn," "Morning Market," "Beach in Early Afternoon" and "Kecak Dance (a form of Balinese dance and music drama, performed primarily by men) in Torchlight."An imposing pesante introduction will properly establish this song's mood. Boldly balance winds and percussion to the prominent timpani solo. At Allegro Vivo, observe the lighter abbreviated scoring and balance melody/countermelody at E. Melodies are elongated at the Grazioso, and tenor/bass rhythm figures need enough separation to be felt. The urgent-feeling Presto must initially be reserved except for the percussive "slaps"; same thing again at O. The daunting rhythmic figure at Q is actually a chattering effect-combine the two elements to teach continuity and placement. Don't "over blow" the ending, but continue to emphasize unique rhythmic elements.(Shin'ya Takahashi)

And Then the Ocean Glows was commissioned by Niihama Grade School and its director, Mr. Shinichi Tagawa and completed in April of 2002. Mr. Tagawa and I titled the piece together, drawing from sectional themes of "Shining Morning Ocean", "Wind Stormy Ocean" and "Large Mother Ocean." Before I began composing the piece, I visited Niihama's rehearsal and met the band's inspired young students. The work's theme and melodies are enjoyable and compelling for musicians; I would be delighted for bands to experience this fresh composition.Niihama Grade School Band performed this work for the All Japan Band Contest in 2002 and advanced to divisional level to receive a gold prize. The band also appeared in the TBS Children's Music Contest and received a first prize. (Satoshi Yagisawa)

The piece is exciting and will be well within the capabilities of students at this grade level.

Triangle of the Tempest is a fast-moving composition with interesting rhythmic challenges and dynamic color shifts. Starting with syncopated figures over a repeated eight-measure progression, the piece builds in intensity as more sections and layers are added.
