This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters. 0:13:30

Prelude Festivo is intended to be performed in concerts and in competitions as well. The work includes solo passages for most instrument groups. Duration 7 minutes. Form: Fast slow fast. The piece is built around two themes. Theme 1 (Allegro con spirito) is the first one presented as a clarinet solo after a fanfare-like opening. Theme 2 is hinted at in the opening bars, but presented fully in the slow (Andante) section (bar 141). This theme is developed and also appears as melodic and rhytmic fragments throughout the composition. In the concluding section (bar 196) both themes are played in conjunction before the piece concludes with the fanfare theme from theopening bars. The solos for cornet and euphonium may be played by saxophone soli cued in at bars 114 and 128. Parts that are marked piu mosso ed leggiero should be played in a cheerful light staccato style in contrast to Andante cantabile.

The piece chronicles the merger of the First Nation (first natives) and modern Albertan cultures.The opening tribal drums followed by the haunting melody simulating the traditional wooden flute comprise two themes that are the foundation for the entire piece. A delightful combination of lyrical themes with rhythmic exuberance and folk-like melodies. "Viva Espania" is based on themes by two 19th-century Spanish composers. The opening theme is from "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by Francisco Tarrega. That piece is a traditional Spanish waltz and was inspired by the famous Alhambra Castle in Grenada. The second theme is by Isaac Albeniz from a suite of music for the piano, "Songs of Spain", entitled "Leyenda". This section, while still in 3/4 has a fiery exuberance much like one would expect from a flamenco guitarist, yet it's very playable by young players. Authentic Spanish music that's a terrific addition to any concert performance!
