Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from Les Sauvages (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau's ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style.Duration: 12.00

During his brief lifetime, Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was at one time or another a soldier, musician, teacher, lawyer, and a college professor. He is perhaps best remembered as a poet and for the middle school in Fairfax, Virginia which bears his name. Inspired by a favourite Lanier quote (Music is love in search of a word), Johnnie Vinson has fashioned a musical theme which captures the essence of this sentiment. With a bit of early American flavour, this main theme progresses through a series of contrasting variations, culminating in a grand and heroic closing statement.Duration: 5.00

Watch Your Step! was commissioned by Stadtmusik Biel from Switzerland and is dedicated to the mayor of Biel/Bienne, Erich Fehr. The title was chosen to represent Biel as the watch-making capital of Switzerland. Watch Your Step! is one part of a series of 'up tempo' Sparke marches such as Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a bright opening, a syncopated first theme is played, firstly by clarinets and saxophones, and then by the full band. A 'bass strain' is followed by a contrasting second subject, which is played twice. The bass melody returns to herald a truncated version of the main theme, before the opening fanfare reappears as a coda.Duration: 4.30

The White Thrill is a composition written on behalf of the "Musikkapelle Sankt Anton am Arlberg", in Austria. The theme refers to the ski race "Der weisse Rausch", that takes place every year in Sankt Anton. The composition is in an overture form, with a majestic introduction, a fast part, a slow part and a reprise of the fast part. One theme characterizes the entire composition, with its pleasantly syncopated and fascinating rhythms; symbolizing in music the sinuous gait of the track and the rapid maneuvers of the skiers. In the introduction, the majestic aspect, symbolizes the charm of the summits covered with snow, the grandeur of the alpine landscape. In the slow part, one can imagine the quiet of winter nights lit by the moon and the stars. A beautiful and ingenious piece. Duration: 8.00

Sbandiamo! is a joyous--and swinging--work, taking its title from the wind music event held annually in the medieval Italian city of Gubbio, Umbria in which various bands from all over Italy participate. The first performance of this piece was given at the Piazza Grande, Gubbio, under the baton of the composer himself, with a wind band of some 250 musicians. A stately introduction, with festive percussion, is followed by a catchy theme in alternating pop and march rhythms. The opening theme then returns as a marcia cantabile, and the work is brought to a grand and compelling conclusion.Duration: 5.30

£100.00Battles (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dobson, Simon
Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands, and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War, Introduction of Admiral von Spee, German Banquet, Building Steam/Preparing, Islanders, Call to Arms, Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra, symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp. Composer Simon Dobson says of his colourful score, "I wanted to keep things simple and clear, so there is a British theme, a fanfare march idea, often heard on trumpet, and a German naval theme, which is a more angular motif." A Bluegrass Overture was commissioned by Gabriel Wooley and funded by a grant from Leslie and Cathy Anderson for the Central Kentucky Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2016. This energetic overture opens with an introduction loosely based on bluegrass chords before a slower, legato chorale appears in the clarinets and flutes. This is short-lived and soon a new mood is introduced, based on a repeated-note accompaniment. This leads to the main theme, heavily syncopated with bluesy inflections. A central section features a cantabile melody, which changes key frequently, before the main theme reappears, leading to a triumphal presentation of the earlier chorale melody.Duration: 6.30
