The King's March - Søren Hyldgaard
This lively new work, expertly arranged by Johan de Meij, is taken from the soundtrack of the recently released animated film Till Eulenspiegel. In writing the music for the film the composer, Sren Hyldgaard, said: "Writing music for an animated adventure romp like Till Eulenspiegel is about as much fun as I can imagine having as a composer.While extremely challenging on the timing and hitting-the-action side, the furious universe of the animated adventure genre is as much an inspiration as it is an obstacle." The King's March from Till Eulenspiegel captures the high spirits of the film itself with the arrival of the extravagant entourage containing the royal carriage with all itsPomp and Circumstance.

When Philip Sparke composed this piece he tried to create a work that characterised man's ability to overcome personal tragedy and the feeling of serenity gained when the tragedy is forgotten. To do this he decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat, such as a ferocious forest fire to re-grow. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict,catharsis, inner calm and finally triumph. A fantasic new major concert work from the pen of Philip Sparke.

The Legend of Ratu Kidul carries us into the world of Indonesian mythology, on the island of Java:Once upon a time, the Queen of the Southern Seas was a kind and beautiful princess. She was the daughter of Prabu Munding Wangi, the favourite ofthe entire court and the local people. Her royal father doted on his daughter. Her name was Dewi Kadita, but many called her Dewi Srengenge or the Angry Princess.Prabu Munding Wangi longed for an heir, but Dewi Kadita's mother couldn't fulfil thiswish. So he took a second wife, called Poetri Moentiara, who was very jealous of the lovely princess and her mother. She begged the king to banish both her rivals from court. However Prabu Munding Wangi didn't do as she asked. He loved his first wifeand her daughter. The second wife bore him a healthy heir, but the monarch remained firm. So Poetri Moentiara called upon the renowned witch, Djahil. She promised her a princely reward, if Dewi Kandita and her mother were banished. Djahil thought fora moment and incanted this rapal (spell): "May leprosy befall you both". Soon both mother and daughter began to suffer this dreadful disease. According to the law of the land, they were to be banished to the wild forest high on the mountain. With aheavy heart, King Munding Wangi saw the law carried out. So the two set off on their way to the forest, covered in terrible sores. A great sadness fell across the land, except for Poetri Moentiara, the second wife of the king, who had achieved heraim. The princess fell on hard times. In the forest lived a hermit, who took pity on the mother and daughter. The queen couldn't bear the shame and within a few days had died. Now Dewi Kandita was all alone in the world. There was still the hermit,however, who fortunately provided food and shelter in a cave temple. He bound her weeping sores but couldn't relieve her emotional pain. Dewi Kandita became increasingly bitter and eventually left the hermit. She travelled southward from village tovillage, further and further, until eventually she reached the shores of the Southern Sea. She climbed upon a high cliff and gazed out onto the sea that spread before her. She was tempted to dive into the deep green and blue. In the cool waters shewould be able to forget all her pain and suffering. Suddenly awaking from these thoughts, she jumped into the deep. The gods, who had looked on Dewi Kandita throughout her hardships, were filled with deep compassion. So they transformed her into apowerful spirit of the netherworld, Ratu Kidul, and to this day she resides in her grand palace under the sea.

It was premiered by the band on 7 February 2009, conducted by Masuo Nakamura. This concert march was conceived to lift up the spirits of the firemen who save people's lives. The solemn and heart-warming melodies express their braveness when faced with danger and the tenderness shown towards the people they protect.It is an ideal march to open a concert and to inspire both performers and audience.

I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people's faces.

The Golden City - Jan Bosveld
Prague, also named 'The Golden City', has been the cultural and administrative capital city of the Czech Republic for thousands of years. The city is beautifully situated on the river Moldau. Every year millions of tourists visit Prague. It is one of the most popular cities of Eastern Europe. With it's mysterious little squares, dark alley ways and cobblestone streets, the 'City of the 100 Towers' is a unique mixture of architecture, dominated by monumental buildings, numerous churches and the oldest castle of Europe. The Bohemian capital city remains timeless. Visit the fort and be amazed at the lovely views over the Charles Bridge. Spend your time carefully browsing through the little stalls filled with paintings, photos, jewelery and hand-decorated products, accompanied by the sounds of the street musicians in the background. Notice the famous 15 th century astronomical clock that indicates the time every hour with a parade of the twelve apostles. When composing this piece, it was Jan Bosveld's intention to depict the atmosphere of this metropolitan city with over one million inhabitants, rather than to create a fairly literal musical portrait. One of the many other names of Prague is 'The City of the Clocks'. This can be heard throughout the piece depicted by the tubular bells. The piece consists of three movements (slow-fast-slow) and was written in a rhapsodic format. Jan Bosveld was commissioned to write 'The Golden City' by the Dutch Music Lend and Information Centre (MUI), a department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

Commissioned for the University of Akron Symphonic Band, this dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music composed for the Olympic Games. Based on three primary themes, the first is a brilliant fanfare that serves as anintroduction as well as a unifying link throughout. Second is the 1896 Olympic Hymn (music by Spyros Samaras) set in a beautiful lyric style which builds to a magnificent climax juxtaposed with the opening fanfare. The finalsection presents a new version of Mr. Curnow's own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000. Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise was commissioned by Yuying Secondary School Concert Band and Yuying Alumni Association for the 2010 centenary of the school's foundation. The piece was named by a friend of the composer named Steven Phua, who originally suggested commissioning a new piece to Satoshi Yagisawa. The piece furthermore takes its name from the text of the Yuying Secondary School song.This composition is based on three different concepts: the first one demonstrates 'The founders' passion for education'; the second concept illustrates 'Hardship in war time'; the third one 'To the future' describes the inner strength people find to overcome struggles. Thispiece concludes with a fanfare, which is the sound of hope that leads to a brighter future in a positive direction.The world premiere of this piece was conducted by Faizal Bin Othman, who is one of the leading educators in Singapore, and was performed by the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band.
