    Iberian Trumpets - Ferrer Ferran

Iberian Trumpets is a characteristically Spanish, lively and warm-hearted composition in four movements. The opening cadence is in the form of a cante jondo - a _x005F_x001D_flamenco song. Now follows a fandango, which in turn heralds a gypsy dance with castanets. The middle section is a bolero, an enchanting melody over a continual ostinato, which leads to an energetic repeat of the fandango.

O Helga natt - Adolphe Charles Adam

O Holy Night is a very well-known Christmas carol. The origin of the carol is French beginning with the words: "Minuit! Chrtiens, c'est l'heure solennelle". It is about the birth of Jesus and was written in 1843 by a wine merchant and poet by the name of Placide Cappeau (1808 77). He turned to the composer Adolphe Adam (1803 56) and asked him to write a suitable melody. The result was brilliant and the carol was premiered in Cappeau's home town Roquemaure in 1847 by the opera singer Emily Laurey. Based on Cappeau's French text, the English version was written in 1855 by an American Unitarian (Calvinist) minister by the name of John Sullivan Dwight (1813 93). Adolphe Adamwas the son of the pianist and composer Louis Adam (1758 1848), who did not want his son to follow in his foot-steps as a musician. However, Adolphe wanted otherwise, and already at the age of 17 he was accepted to study at the music conservatoire in Paris. He was a student under Franois Adrien Bo eldieu and composed several comical operas that became successful. After the July-revolution 1830 Adam moved to London. He worked for a couple of years before returning to Paris, where he founded a new opera house in 1847, the Th tre national. After the revolution in 1848 it had to close and Adam was ruined, why he had to go back to composing. In 1856 he concluded the ballet Le Corsaire, which together with the ballet Giselle are his most performed works today.

    Jericho - Bert Appermont

Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites.Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan, the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home, for the end of a roaming existence. The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2. The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove theinhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However, there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3).Following a personal and romantic interpretation, the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms, often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.

Lament and Tribal Dances - Michael Sweeney

Commissioned by the Iowa Bandmasters Association, this dynamic work from Michael Sweeney is written in three contrasting sections. The opening Lament features a plaintive horn melody and expansive harmonies. The mood then shifts to an intensely rhythmic dance using an unusual modal scale. In the final section, the flutes switch to recorders and a driving percussion ostinato figure helps propel this magnificent piece to a dramatic ending. A rewarding and satisfying work from one of today's best composers for young bands.

    Dreamcatcher - Robert Buckley

The inspiration for this unique composition came from the charming Iroquois folk melody, Ho Ho Watanay and the ancient Ojibwe legend of the dreamcatcher. It was believed that the magical webs of the dreamcatcher would filter out all bad dreams and only allow good thoughts to enter the mind. Using evocative percussion effects, colorful orchestration and harmonies, Dreamcatcher sounds much more impressive and advanced than its grade level would suggest. Definitely a piece that will bring a different flavor to any concert and excite the imagination! Dur: 2:45
