The medieval plainchant melody Divinum Mysterium is used as the source material for this piece, as its melodic elements are constantly varied throughout. Beginning in a slow, stately tempo as it might have been heard in a cathedral in the middle ages, the initial setting ultimately gives way to fast, driving rhythms which support more and more variations on the tune. The arch-like form of the plainchants final phrase is mirrored in the brasses three times within the piece, the most dramatic of which occurs near the end as Ancient Hymn Tune Variants reaches its exciting and triumphant conclusion.

According to Sousa scholar Paul Bierley, Sousa often remarked that the old Scottish ballad Annie Laurie was the most beautiful of all folk songs. In 1883 he wrote the march Bonnie Annie Laurie based on this favorite folk song. In 1880 Sousa became the fourteenth leader of the United States Marine Band, and this was undoubtedly one of the marches that he composed during this period. Highlighted and enhanced in this march-style setting, this wonderful melody never sounded better.

It was asked that the celebratory work also also provide a middle section that could serve the school as an alma mater for the school. The true spirit of the student body is reflected in the great opening fanfare in the high brass with strong support from the percussion section. The alma mater is first presented by the full woodwind choir supported with glistening metallic percussion as accompaniment. A lush, full band treatment follows, emphasizing the majestic import of the meaningful melody. An energetic finale brings the work to a fittingly proud and regal close.
