O Heiland, rei die Himmel auf (O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide) was written by the German poet Friedrich von Spee (1591-1635) during the Thirty Years? War. The profound text echoes the misery of that time, but at the same time reflects hope of comfort and redemption. This well-known Advent song is sung in the Catholic as well as the Protestant Church. Jacob de Haan has used the beautiful melody for this arrangement for concert band.

Maria durch ein? Dornwald ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Michael Bilkes used the well-known melody to create this attractive arrangement for concert band.

Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Hh' sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director's discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

It makes a perfect piece to mark any anniversary or as a surprise on someone's actual birthday. The trio section of this march quotes the familiar tune, Happy Birthday, before melody, counter-melody and the initial theme all combine to create an extravagant musical celebration. £244.99Variations on a Pentatonic Theme - Rob Goorhuis
Rob Goorhuis wrote his Variations on a Pentatonic Theme (1987) for the Royal Wind band of Thorn, conductor Jan Cober. The work consists of five character variations on a pentatonic (five-tone) theme. The basic elements of the theme are the descending minor third and the descending major second, which in the course of the composition build up to a broad melody, unfolding itself in the final variation. The first variation resembles minimal music in its repetitive rhythmic motives. The second variation is explosive in character: rapid broken chords provide a background for soft solo motifs. The third variation is a quiet intermezzo on a slow chorale theme, creatingtwo contrasting moods. The fourth variation is a light-hearted scherzo. The final variation is a brilliant finale with all the necessary ingredients, or, in the composer's words, "the works" Testpiece WMC 2005 Concert Division.
