'Gaudete' comes from the Finnish/Swedish 'Piae Cantiones', a collection of religious music from the 16th century. The English folk group 'Steeleye Span' featuring female lead singer Maddy Prior had a hit with this song in the seventies. Peter Martin made a scintillating arrangement for wind-band. By the use of fourths and thirds in the melody the composer harks back to the period from which the song originated (The Middle Ages)

The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist.After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style.An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics.Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the latin text for Adeste Fideles:Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantesThe Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.

The Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan possibly had his greatest success in 1972 with Clair. With its jazzy harmony, this song deviated a little from the spirit of the time. Stefan Schwalgin took the theme of Clair as a starting point, and gave the melody to the alto saxophone. His arrangement fits the tradition of solo works in which it is not so much about technical virtuosity, but rather about the sincerity and charm of the expression. Although the roots of this British folksong date back to the 18th century, the first publication of the melody was in the late 1850's in the collection "National English Airs". Early One Morning is the story of a young woman misused by her lover, as overheard by the singer. In the mid-1930's the tune was adapted as a military slow march called "The Globe and Laurel" for the Royal Marines band. This arrangement focuses on the lyricism of the original with just a hint of its later military associations. Only the 1st clarinets cross the break. 1st trumpet's highest note is F.

Finnish Folk Song Suite - Jan Van der Roost
In this moderately easy suite, Jan Van der Roost uses four authentic folk tunes from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. These are from Nagu, Oravais, Lappfjrd and Karlebynejden, and have been joined together without pauses to form a continuous suite. The work begins with noble, almost meditative melodies. Gradually the tempo becomes faster, resulting in a brilliant and cheerful folk dance. The melody regularly goes from one band section to another ensuring that the timbre remains varied and there is no question of monotony. This is an attractive suite which is within the range of the majority of concert bands.
