Vise i vinterlys - Erik Bye
Erik Bye (1926-2004) was a major Norwegian TV-personality in his time, a colourful man with a varied background. He was a great lyricist, and many of his poems and songs have become modern Norwegian classics. This song, which could be translated at A ballad in Winter-light is maybe his only love-poem. He text describes a cold scene, where the lovers meet, and the images Bye paint are cold, bleak - but still with a warm intensity. The norwegian composer Egil Monn-Iversen (1928-2017) has brought a Scandinavian Noir feel to the text, they suit the lyrics perfectly.- John Philip Hannevik -

Deck the Halls
The original Welsh song Nos galan dating back to the sixteenth century, has become an international Christmas carol with the English lyric Deck the hall with boughs of holly. The song does not offer much in terms of variation, but I have tried to construct a short piece where one can see that the song still offers itself to a wide array of stylistical treatments. The opening is almost like a Christmas Overture, before it wanders in to a renaissance-like style. The middle section offers a much more lush and lyrical rubato treatment, with lots of color and thick harmonization. The end then turns the tempo even more up than at the start of the piece, and brings us through a big band ending with long soaring lines.- John Philip Hannevik -

March from the Ballet Corso Donate - Joseph Lanner
A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.

Echoes from the Battlefield was written to mark the 100th anniversary of World War I. It presents four popular songs from that era. It opens with the well-known Over There, which is followed by Its a Long Way from Tipperary. The warm and moving Keep the Home Fires Burning then follows before closing with the jaunty and morale-boosting Pack Up Your Troubles in an Old Kit Bag.

Christmas on the Thames - Porter Eidam
Christmas on the Thames is a fantasy of English Christmas carols circling around the beloved melody I Saw Three Ships. It reflects the buzz of activity both on the streets of London and on board a schooner bound for port loaded with cargo and gifts. Decorations are put in the shop windows; the aroma of warm chestnuts and puddings fill the air; carolers sing; the mulled punch known as wassail is drunk. The piece culminates with the ship pulling up to the dock to the sounds of celebratory cheers and ringing church bells. Merry Christmas, guvnor!
