A new acquisition by Bravo Music, this fresh printing of the 1990 masterwork by Yasuhide Ito features a newly engraved score, improved parts, good availability and value. CantusThe second movement, Cantus showcases a brilliant blend of Gregorian chant and Japanese elements by opening with a solo passage for the ryuteki, a type of flute. The theme is based on San Juan-sama no Uta (The Song of Saint John), a 17th-century songcommemorating the "Great Martyrdom of Nagasaki" where a number of Kyushu Christians were killed in 1622.III. Dies FestusThe third and final movement, Dies Festus, takes as its theme the Nagasaki folk song, Nagasaki Bura Bura Bushi, where many Crypto-Christians lived.Commissioned in 1989 and premiered in 1990 by the Sasebo Band of the Maritime Self-Defense Force of Kyushu, southern Japan.Gloriosa is inspired by the songs of the Kakure-Kirishitan (Crypto-Christians) of Kyushu who continued to practice their faith surreptitiously after the ban of Christianity, which had been introduced to that southern region in the mid-16th century byRoman Catholic missionary Francisco Xavier. The worship brought with it a variety of western music.

Marco Polo (French text) - Antonio Rossi

Marco Polo (Venice, 1254), son of Venetian merchants, left in 1271 with his father Niccol and his uncle Matteo, towards the distant China at the court of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. The long journey, which lasted three and a half years, led the Polos to cross Turkey, Central Asia, the Pamir, and the Gobi desert. The intelligence of the young Marco and his curiosity towards new customs and languages raises the interest of the emperor so much that he decides to keep him at his court by appointing him ambassador. This assignment takes him to newly conquered southern China and other parts of southern Asia. In 1292, the Great Kublai Khan agrees, albeit reluctantly, to let him go.Marco, after 17 years at his service, can finally return to Venice, but not before completing a last mission for the Grand Khan: accompanying his niece, Princess Kokachin, to Persia, where she would marry. A few years after his arrival in Venice, Marco finds himself involved in a naval battle against the Genoese people in which the Venetians are defeated. Consequently, Marco is captured and taken to prison in Genoa. There, he meets the storyteller Rustichello da Pisa to whom he tells the story of his adventurous journey. After his release, Marco returned to Venice and led a comfortable life until his death in 1324.

    In Memoriam - Johan Halvorsen

Johan Halvorsens In Memoriam, Opus 30 was written for the great Norwegian poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson. The two men became very close friends and Halvorsen composed a funeral march in Bjornsons honor upon his death in 1910. The musics link with Bjornson is underscored by the fact that it opens with a paraphrase of the Norwegian national anthem. At the peak, it suddenly falls away, and following a roll of the timpani, the anthem is played in its entirety. Vocal parts sung by members of the ensemble contribute to the overall effect and make this a most memorable and moving work.

Corridors Of Castle Doria - Barry E. Kopetz

The Corridors of Castle Doria is a musical journey through a castle of varied and mysterious corridors. The opening represents standing upon the steps of the castle and being in awe of its size and majesty. The first corridor becomes narrow and somewhat close, moving ever smaller into a virtual crawlspace. The next section represents a dungeon-like corridor, dark, dank and musty, followed by a secret passage. Finally, there appears a long dark corridor that ultimately ends in the Great Hall and then a race to get out of the narrow corridor and outside to safety.

Esprit Du Corps March - John Philip Sousa

Fans and march enthusiasts will be delighted with this wonderfully stylish rediscovered march. At the time this march was written, Sousa was living in Philadelphia and had not yet begun his Marine Band career - but he was an accomplished composer who already had 34 publications to his credit. However, the march was not published for band until after he left the Marine Band and formed his professional band. This march, listed as Opus 45, is a fitting tribute to the great talent of the young John Philip Sousa, and to the esprit de corps of bands everywhere.
