"The Cosmographic Mystery" outlines the great mysteries and secrets of the universe. The musical foundation is a tribute to composer Gustav Holst, and his suite "The Planets". Each movement from the suite is quoted in the course of the piece. The title is taken from a book by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, which was published in the 17th century. The book explains Kepler's cosmological theory that the distance relationship between the planets could be understood in light of the five Platonic solids. The theory proposes that the solids dictate the structure of the universe through geometry. "The Cosmographic Mystery" is supported by the Norwegian Composers' Fund, and was commissioned by Oslofjord brass.

Today, building walls remains an issue, often under the pretext of 'protection' against intruders.This idea inspired Otto M. Schwarz to write a piece about the Roman limes between Germania and Rhaetia. From around 150 to 260 AD the wall faced numerous attacks. This programmatic work describes the events as they happened a long time ago, and addresses hope that these events belong to the past forever. The Spiked Wheel - Tom De Haes
The legends surrounding Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as the Great Martyr Saint Catherine, were the source of inspiration for this work. It depicts events surrounding her life in five musical episodes. The first episode presents the Emperor's procession and theme. All is well until a heathen sacrificial ritual is heard in the second movement. After the sacrifice, Catherine and her lyrical, reflective theme make an appearance. A dispute breaks out between Catherine and the Emperor, which can be heard in the heated exchange between their respective themes. Catherine is sentenced to die by the breaking wheel. The voices of angels can be heard in the finale, asCatherine ascends to heaven.

The Borgia family is the subject of a so-called black legend, a pejorative term that has been used since the Middle Ages to refer to Spain and Spaniards. The Borgias' black legend is one of corruption, abuse of power, orgies, sex and murder. These rumours spread especially during the reign of Pope Alexander VI, a member of the family. Alexander was even referred to as the Antichrist. According to eyewitnesses, when he died Satan prowled the death chamber and a black dog, an envoy of the Devil, ran up and down the aisles of the Vatican. The brutal rule of Pope Alexander and his family led to a kind of demonization of the Borgia family. But it is precisely the lack of scruples, the brewing of poisons, the incest and various cruelties that continue to hold a certain fascination for us.Alexander VI: Rodrigo Borgia was born in 1431 near Valencia. He studied law in Bologna and, through his uncle Pope Calixtus III, he rose through the church hierarchy. As vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Catholic church, he became one of the richest men in Europe. As a cardinal he fathered four children who he later legitimised when he became pope. His election to the papacy was funded by the sale of offices, extortion and bribes of all kinds. Through an alliance with Ascanio Sforza he was elected pope on August 11 1492 and named himself from then on Alexander VI, an allusion to Alexander the Great.Duration: 9.30

The expression comes from the great poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson where he in the poem Siste sang (Last song) describes a battle between a tiger and a horse. The tiger symbolizes the big city (Oslo) while the horse symbolizes the countryside, ie the traditional battle city vs country. Hence Oslo (Kristiania) got the negative nickname Tigerstaden (Tiger City), but as time went on, the name established itself as something positive and familiar, and has become a beloved nickname, without negative associations, in the Capital. Walking The Dog is one of Gershwin's lighter numbers. It is a clarinet showpiece that is just as much fun as the title suggests. Taken from the movie Shall We Dance, staring none other than the great Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Walking The Dog catches George Gershwin at the very height of his powers. Rather than the bustling, complex symphonic scores he was by-now accustomed to knocking out, it's a simple, elegant little stroll, as the title suggests. In fact, in the 1937 film, it accompanies a scene of dog-walking, aboard the luxury deck of an ocean liner. Since its use in the film, though, the song has taken on a life of its own and become a popular showing-off piece for clarinettists everywhere. Interestingly, it's also the only section of score from the whole of Shall We Dance that remains - the rest of the movie's music remains sadly unpublished.Duration: 3.00
