Desperta Ferro!, or "Awake the iron!" was the battle cry of Medieval Spanish soldiers called the Almogavars. In the dim light of dawn, as they prepared for battle, these fierce soldiers would beat their swords on rocks shouting this phrase. The sparks that flew from the rocks in the eerie light of dawn, together with the soldier's call to arms, would give any enemy pause. Awake the Iron, with its insistent unisons, energetic rhythms, modal themes, and powerful percussive writing, mirrors the ferocious intensity of the medieval battlefield. On the morning of April 19th 1995, in the single most violent act of domestic terrorism in the history of the United States, a bomb blast ripped through the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The explosion claimed 168 lives, including 19 children who attended the day care centre on the building's first floor.Across the street from the Murrah Building, an American Elm tree was severely damaged by the blast, but somehow managed to survive. Now known as The Survivor Tree, the elm has become an iconic symbol, one of faith, hope and perseverance in the face of tremendous adversity.Silent Stands the Elm is inspired by the symbolism and message of The Survivor Tree, and is dedicated to the victims and survivors of April 19th 1995.Duration: 5.00

The Suite of Cotswold Folkdances (not to be confused with Cotswold Dances) was commissioned by the Stroud Festival to celebrate HRH, the Princess Anne and her family taking up residence in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. The suite of dances is based on traditional Morris tunes prevalent in the Cotswolds at the turn of the century. Although the tunes themselves are left largely untouched, their implied harmonies and moods are treated more freely to create a balanced work for the concert hall. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 may recall more familiar variants since it is in the nature of folksong/dance for there to be more than one version when examples were transmitted, not always accurately, by word of mouth or note of pipe.

The legends surrounding Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as the Great Martyr Saint Catherine, were the source of inspiration for this work. It depicts events surrounding her life in five musical episodes. The first episode presents the Emperor's procession and theme. All is well until a heathen sacrificial ritual is heard in the second movement. After the sacrifice, Catherine and her lyrical, reflective theme make an appearance. A dispute breaks out between Catherine and the Emperor, which can be heard in the heated exchange between their respective themes. Catherine is sentenced to die by the breaking wheel. The voices of angels can be heard in the finale, as Catherine ascends to heaven.Duration: 16.00

The inspiration for this piece came from the address of the person who commissioned the work: Morse Street, Houston, Texas. It pays tribute to the immense skill of the engineers who succeeded in submerging a wire across the Atlantic to send messages in morse code from America to Europe. This technical ingenuity provided the perfect source of material for a transatlantic musical message. This work explores the vast expanse of the Atlantic and makes use of Irish melodies to celebrate the point where the cable enters into the Atlantic Ocean.Duration: 7.00

This arrangement of two Irish folk songs is dedicated to the memory of Danny Pearl, the Wall Street journalist who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered by Islamic Militants in February 2002. The choice of Danny Boy is an obvious one. The arranger, John O'Reilly, always thinks of Danny when he hears this tune since Mr. O'Reilly's daughter was very close to Danny during their high school years. Danny was a violinist and he loved to play fiddle music. The Wearin' of the Green is in the style Danny enjoyed and the lyrics of the song relate to the struggle of the Irish people as they defied the British oppression.Duration: 2.30

The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," and a variation of the West Point motto, "The Long Gray Line." Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the "noble" theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close.Duration: 8:30

As Santa starts his journey, bringing 'Joy to the World' by delivering presents to children - and adults too, he sets off on his majestic sleigh driven by his reindeer. A few elves have snuck into the sleigh to help. With a whoosh, he flies across the sky and over the snowy mountains. The music is in continuous motion, just like Santa's Sleigh, as he has many presents to deliver before morning.The quiet moments in the music depict Santa's arrival in small villages, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, touching the hearts of people everywhere. During his journey, Santa discovers the elves who have apparently lost some of the presents. Santa offers a gentle reprimand before the presents are ventually found by Elfie, the youngest Elf. After all the presents have been delivered, Santa heads back home as he calls out, "I'll be back next Christmas!"Duration: 4.15
