Eyes on the Stars was commissioned by the Surrey Police Band in 2022 in memory of George Rowland. George was a remarkable character. He was born in Vienna but spent his early days in Tuscany, coming to England with his family at the start of WW2, where he went on to be one of the pioneers of cancer research. He was an avid skier, tennis player and extremely keen musician. Wherever he went he joined a community band so when he and his family settled in Surrey he joined the Surrey Police Band. To them he was George who played bass clarinet, a polite chap with a lovely deep Surrey accent! In trying to fulfil the terms of a commission for a five-minute work I attempted to embrace the verve and aspirational nature of George and his overwhelmingly positive nature, hence the title Eyes on the Stars.- Rob WiffinFirst performed by the Surrey Police Band on 18 March 2023 at Emmanuel Church in Stoughton.Duration: 5.15

The vastness of the Alps is echoed in the lyrical theme, which is followed by a faster, march-like section. This work is not only about the flow of the Doubs, Ranceuse and Roide rivers that converge at Pont-de-Roide but also about the flow of life and history of this French town. The composition begins festively and, after the tempo picks up, the music smoothly and rhythmically depicts the happiness and enthusiasm of the inhabitants. The ever-flowing waters of the rivers introduce the slow, melodic middle section, which suddenly turns into traditional march music. The composition is upbeat, dynamic, and the notes dance. There is no story to tell, but simply a mood of cheerfulness and levity. In the Air expresses a consistently joyful, light-hearted and positive vibe through its mischievously playful motifs; the music blows through as if a light breeze, a fresh wind. Gerald Oswald was born in 1968 in Gross-St. Florian. He completed his education as a trumpeter at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He further pursued studies in conducting and composition under Franz Cibulka at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory in Graz, Thomas Doss at the Music and Arts Private University of Vienna, the Music School Leonding, and the C. The musical Cats, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. It became Lloyd Webber's third great success, after the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. He began setting Eliot's poems to music in 1977, and the compositions were first presented as a song cycle in 1980. Producer Cameron Mackintosh then recruited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynne to turn the songs into a complete musical. Cats became one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The following year, Cats opened at New York's Winter Garden Theatre, its home for the next 18 years, garnering seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show returned to Broadway in 2016, where it had a successful pre-tour run at the Neil Simon Theatre. Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 16 languages, and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Lloyd Webber's magnificent musical score includes the poignant hit song Memory, which has been recorded by over 150 artists, from Barbra Streisand to Liberace to Barry Manilow. It took 7,486 chandelier crashes for Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera to take over from Cats as the longest-running show in Broadway history in January 2006.Duration: 8.15
