Composed in 1942, Barber's Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organised musical modules. The opening theme has adefinite American flavour, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round offthe work. Ferrer Ferran accepted the commission to write the work and asked Mr. Buchmann jokingly to sing him a motif offive notes that would serve as the leitmotif of the composition. Starting from these five notes (Ab, B, D#, E, F), the composer has created Sdwind Overture - the result is a fantastic musical achievement that shows a great senseof imagination. Dur: 7:00

The plot of this overture takes place in the year 3000 A.D. At that time traffic between the earth and the planets relies exclusively on space flights. War as a last resort to "settle" arguments between people on earth no longer exists. There is only one gigantic spacecraft which is able to navigate both above and beneath the surface that supervises the oceans. This vessel, the "Lord of Seven Seas", is a hundred times larger than the "Nautilus" or the "Titanic" and must not be compared to any ship of our times. In the introduction of the overture, the gigantic vessel is presented by employing a musical style which is commonly associated with space flights. The introduction isfollowed by a fragment, which evokes the wild fury of rain and storm, and therefore reminds us of the story of the "Flying Dutchman". The middle section is written as a barcarole. The vessel investigates the local fauna in the depths of the Arctic Ocean. People on board enjoy the calmness as well as the variety and beauty of the animals. In the final part, the gigantic vessel emerges from below the surface and climbs to high altitudes flying from one ocean to the other. The magnificent finale portrays once again the incomparable sight which is offered by the impressive "Lord of Seven Seas".

The first performance of the opera "Hunyadi Lszl" by Ferenc Erkel (1810-1893) at the National Theater in Pest took place in times that foreboded the revolt of 1848. The rise of this stage work to Hungary's national opera and its ensuing immediate great success probably is due to the plot itself and the atmosphere prevailing in the country at that time. The great flute virtuoso and composer Franz Doppler (1821-1883) asked "Erkel to grant permission to write a march on the basis of motifs from this opera for my citizen's guards band, which he explicitly consented to ..." From the days of the revolution against Habsburg until today the "Hunyadi indul" ("March on Motifs of theOpera 'Hunyadi'") has remained to be popular throughout and therefore may rightly be addressed as a Hungarian national march.

The summer solstice takes place on the longest day of the year, marking the only day on the calendar that the sun rises perfectly in the center of the stones at Stonehenge. Only the first clarinet crosses the break. 1st trumpet's highest note is E.
