Notes from the Road - Franco Cesarini
"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds." - Edward AbbeyNotes from the Road was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the music Federation of the Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, as compulsory piece for the second category of the Canton Festival in 2023. The piece is written in the typical form of an Italian overture, with the sequence of veloce-lento-veloce tempi. Reflections on life and the street as its metaphor were the driving elements in composing this piece. The way represents a symbol characteristic to many cultures, so much so that the verb "to walk" or the word "path" indicate a way of being in life and of fulfilling oneself. "Making one's way" means affirming oneself; "Having a way" indicates one's own and personal approach. The road is the most beautiful metaphor of life: there is a departure, a destination, and in the middle lies a path that is sometimes winding, with challenges to overcome and directions to take.An introspective piece, an invitation to each of us to reflect on our own "path".

The Way to Heaven - Philip Sparke
The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler's ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron's Merlin engines bursting into life before theyline up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

Devastation and destruction ensue as the city turns to chaos caused by the tremors and aftershocks of the earthquake. An odd-metered march develops that signifies the soldiers marching in to take control of the city as it burns in the aftermath of the quake.

As The Last Light Fades - Jeremy Bell
"As The Last Light Fades" is a programmatic work, capturing the gradual shift when the sunset gives way to a brief moment of twilight, and the stars begin to take their place in the heavens waiting for darkness to blanket the sky. As the sun starts to descend beyond the horizon, a light rainfall plays percussively on the leaves hanging above. The music conveys the feeling of peace and tranquility that one can only really experience in nature, an ethereal and almost transcendent connection, undisturbed by the disruptions of the modern world.

The Forge of Freedom - Travis J. Weller
George Washington and the Continental Armys withdrawal from Philadelphia to Valley Forge was one of the darkest chapters of the Revolutionary War. The demoralized mood of the troops is conveyed by the Revolutionary-era hymn Chester in a minor setting. A tempo change ushers in a new spirit as the Continental Army perseveres through the harsh winter and becomes a hardened fighting force. Finally, Chester is triumphantly presented in a major key as the now-formidable army emerges, ready to take up the fight and secure Americas independence.
