The Quest (Symphony No. 3, 'Don Quixote,' Mvt. I)

At long last, Robert W. Smith gives us another major work based upon classic literature. Symphony No. 3 Don Quixote musically portrays the classic tale of the errant knight, his trusty yet bumbling squire and their adventures in the name of chivalry. The Quest, the first of four movements, is distinctly Spanish in flavor. Using a blend of classic and contemporary techniques, the composer weaves together a sonic tale of the gentleman of La Mancha who takes up his lance and sword to defend those that are helpless and destroy those that are evil. Captivating, musical and full of vivid imagery, Symphony No. 3 "Don Quixote" will be a performance that is memorable for performer and audience alike.

    Symphony No. 5

This four movement piece was composed around three recognized chorale melodies: Durch Adams Fall ("Through Adam's Fall") in the first movement; O Lamn Gottes, unschuldig ("O Lamb of God, without Blame") in the second movement; and Christ lag in Tdesbanden ("Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death") in the third and fourth movements. Although Maslanka's works usually portray feelings of loss and grief, Symphony No. 5 is filled with a bright and hopeful energy. The music continually speaks to the theme of transformation - the transformation of tears into power, and the victory of life over death.

Symphony of Freedom - Thomas Doss

"All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood." This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first 'Cry for Freedom' it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement 'Dream of Freedom' takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale 'Freedom Above All' refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. This movement should be seen first and foremost as an affirmation of life, faith and hope for a better world.

Symphony No. 2 - Views of Edo - Franco Cesarini

Edo is the ancient name for the city of Tokyo. Inspired by a series of woodcuts by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) entitled 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo', Cesarini's symphony is based upon a few traditional Japanese melodies. The composition is divided into five movements in arch form: a structure in which the individual sections are arranged symmetrically around a centre. Each movement takes its title from a print from the 'One Hundred Views'.
