The Quest (Symphony No. 3, 'Don Quixote,' Mvt. I)

At long last, Robert W. Smith gives us another major work based upon classic literature. Symphony No. 3 Don Quixote musically portrays the classic tale of the errant knight, his trusty yet bumbling squire and their adventures in the name of chivalry. The Quest, the first of four movements, is distinctly Spanish in flavor. Using a blend of classic and contemporary techniques, the composer weaves together a sonic tale of the gentleman of La Mancha who takes up his lance and sword to defend those that are helpless and destroy those that are evil. Captivating, musical and full of vivid imagery, Symphony No. 3 "Don Quixote" will be a performance that is memorable for performer and audience alike.

    Symphony No. 3

The largest of David Maslanka's wind symphonies in scale and duration, Symphony No. 3 was commissioned by the University of Connecticut Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Gary Green, conductor, and premiered by them in 1991. It is in five movements and lasts nearly 50 minutes. The moderate tempo and forceful character of the first movement contrast with the serene "nature" music of the second movement. The third movement, a fast and bristling scherzo largely in A Minor, is followed by two slower movements, both labeled "lament." The composer characterizes the music of these movements as both sorrowful and joyful. The fifth movement, in particular, has the lamenting character overcome by an ecstatic vision of natural beauty and the life force. Symphony No. 3 is arguably Maslanka's most profound and satisfying large-scale work, and it ends in an unequivocal A Major that has the feeling of a benediction. Large score and parts are available on rental.

The Winds of Poseidon (from The Odyssey (Symphony No. 2)) - By Robert W. Smith

The Winds of Poseidon launches the eagerly awaited Second Symphony from the pen of Robert W. Smith. This work, the second movement of the symphony, is based on the classic story The Odyssey. Odysseus is the shipwrecked warrior who wanders the land and sea for ten years, and this bold musical statement captures the essence of the powerful winds and waves that propel Odysseus on his journey. The center section was inspired by the tale of the Sirens, whose beautiful and captivating singing lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks. The genius of the composer is strongly in evidence in this gigantic musical tale. (7:33)

Cellular Symphony - By Robert Sheldon

In the style of Mozart's Kinder Symphony and Haydn's Toy Symphony, this tongue-in-cheek composition not only is great fun for the audience, but also makes a statement about the use of cell phones during concert performances! The classical style is an excellent teaching tool for younger players, while the percussion section has an opportunity to try out their latest ring-tones. This could also feature your Principal, Superintendent, school board members or the Mayor as the "cellular soloists".
