Chant Rituals (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Del Borgo, Elliot

Cast in three main sections, Chant Rituals makes use of two contrasting thematic statements to exploit the timbral and rhythmic resources of the symphonic band. A highly chromatic middle section leads to a dramatic restatement of the original material. A powerful and dramatic work for concert and contest.

Diagram (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre

The story of the origin of Diagram for Symphonic Band is a curious one. Andre Waignein was enjoying a meal together with his great friend Jean-Marie Vivier - representative director of l'Oreal Belgilux and the same man who made the performance of the famous Cantate aux Etoiles, with 750 performers possible. Jean Plaquet, an appreciated associate of both gentlemen was also present. As an acknowledgement, Andre Waignein wanted to dedicate a composition to the band where Mr. Vivier has been chairman for 20 years. In connection with this, Andre Waignein was supposed to receive some extra information about the 120 years old history of this band, which has always been led by a member of the Vivier family. In a flash this history was presented : using a diagram Mr. Vivier drew the power-lines of this more than 100 year old band. And of course, the title was found ! The only thing left to do, was for Andre Waignein to transform this diagram into music.Duration: 13:45

Aladdin Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Nielsen, Carl - De Meij, Johan

The large creative output of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865 - 1931) contains six symphonies, chamber music, vocal works and music for the theatre: two operas (Saul & David and Maskerade) and stage music for sixteen different plays. Already before the premiere at the Royal Theatre, Carl Nielsen had adapted some of the music for the concert hall: he conducted the first performance of six of the seven movements of the concert suite on February6th, 1919. Johan de Meij's transcription for symphonic band contains the following movements: I. Oriental Festival March; II. Aladdin's Dream / Dance of the Morning Mist; III. African Negro Dance

Canterbury Chorale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of the English city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases for several instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an "ad libitum" organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad and grand.Duration: 6:30

Alternances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre

In 1984 the Corciano (Italy) Tourist Authority initiated a composition competition for wind band. For this event Andre Waignein composed "Alternances for Symphonic Band", a piece which won him the first prize in the competition. The opening of the work is based on a very tonal foundation. The English horn (or alto saxophone) introduces a rich and warm theme which is immediately taken up by the whole orchestra in a grandiose manner. The subsequent development shows off all the elements of the orchestra to the full. In the second movement, the English horn (or alto saxophone) comes to the fore again. A harmonic change gradually takes us back to the allegro of the first movement. The musical development is here dominated by exuberance, virtuosity and rhythm.Duration: 12:30

Aquarium (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan

The Suite Aquarium is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and describes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements. The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.Duration: 9.00

Centennial Prelude (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed! It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introduction reoccurs. Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.Duration: 3:30

Loch Ness (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan

A Scottish Fantasy. The symphonic poem Loch Ness consists of five through-composed impressions of this mysterious Scottish Lake. I) The Lake at Dawn - calm, static, sonorous blocks depict the troubled opaque water surface and the enormous depth of the Lake at daybreak. II) Slowly the rising early-morning mist reveals the distant ruins of Urquhart Castle, represented by a solemn theme in the trombones which is taken over by the full band, thus evoking the illustrious past of this fortress besieged so many times. III) Inverness: Bagpipes and Tourists - the music takes us down to the town of Inverness where the first tourists mark the slow but steady start of a new season to the sound of a Scottishmelody. IV) Storm - suddenly a heavy wheater breaks: fierce gusts of wind and heavy showers transform the erstwhile calm surface into an obscure and whirling mass of water, and clouds rapidly passing over offer an eery scene. V) Conclusion - storm and rain gradually decrease and when everything is quiet again we are granted a last view of the Lake in its full glory. Duration: 12.15
