Anniversary Overture was commissioned in 1968 as a twenty-first birthday piece for Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, and is a four-minute firework display for orchestra. Within the framework of a two-four Allegro giubiloso,Arnold alternates two major themes, one breezy, the other tender, developing them extensively and landing resoundingly in F major. This new transcription brings an exuberant work to the field of symphonic wind band for the firsttime.

Dies Irae - Elliot Del Borgo
This symphonic poem is based on a chant attributed to Jacopone da Todi (c. 1230 1306) and describes the day of wrath and impending doom, while asking for mercy and salvation. According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.'

In 1885 Verdi wrote I Vespri Siciliani, an opera which would provide him with an international reputation. The overture is based on motifs and themes from the opera, used in a rhapsodic way. A mysterious introduction and several energetic themes alternate with some passionate melodies, the secret of which only Verdi had. The French composer and conductor Paul Desprey made this arrangement for symphonic band.
