Grace Williams (1906 - 1977) from Barry, South Wales, was Wales finest composer. She studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Ralph Vaughan Williams and completed the Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes in 1940. The iconic Fantasia, - her most popular work, which brought her to prominence - is a composition for symphonic orchestra based on traditional Welsh nursery tunes and lullabies.It is a light-hearted musical journey through childhood in eight traditional tunes. The jubilant start to the work is echoed in the finale, with a calmer, but effectively scored middle section.The Fantasia was featured in the 2024 Last Night of the Proms. Talisman tells the story of the "Pierre du Serment", an event that took place in 1639 in the village of Fontenotte, on the border between France and Switzerland. Composed of three brothers and their parents, the Billod family lived peacefully on their farm despite the Thirty Years' War raging around them. When their father was captured by the Swedish mercenaries who plundered the farm, the three brothers vowed to save him, carving their pact in stone according to a Celtic and Viking tradition.Commissioned by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Montlebon for its centenary, this work pays tribute to a local story that has become a legend. The conductor, Jean-Pierre Frigo, wanted this commission to mark the orchestra's presence within the region.Duration: 13.15

This composition exudes serenity and tranquillity, but also intensity and expressiveness - giving it similar qualities to earlier works by Van der Roost, like Canterbury Chorale and Adagio for Winds. Long melodic lines characterize the main themes that arise in different registers and develop through varying keys. The band rather sounds like an organ: the varying timbres and broad musical phrases fully justify the comparison with this majestic instrument. There is no bombast, and the work contains no exaggerated technical or rhythmic tours de force. On the contrary, from a lush richness it moves towards a softening final passage that culminates in a slowly fading final chord: following the many warm harmonies and grand melodies, this work concludes in a contemplative mood.Duration: 7.45

This work describes the way the German river Saar holds the names of all the people who once lived in the area and of those who live there now. The introduction depicts the river flowing toward its confluence with the Mosel. The first names revealed by the river, in a dance, are those of the Romans, who established their first settlement here. Then the beautiful Saar Cathedral is portrayed, where believers give voice to the names of the people they know. Next, a powerful passage resounds: a reflection of the entrepreneurial spirit in Dillingen that has taken shape through the famous metal industry. Via a short clarinet solo, the work flows toward its conclusion in an emotional, stirring fashion, from nostalgic strains to full-blown euphoria.Duration: 9.00

This beautiful chorale was commissioned by the Temasek Junior College Alumni Band from Singapore and is dedicated to its conductor, Mr. Lin Ah Leck, who sadly passed away in 2019. The music pays homage to Maestro Lin-sheng, as he was affectionately called by the band members. Mr. Lin, a devotee of Yagisawa's music, selected many of his works for their concerts. Having visited Singapore many times, the composer has had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Lin and his band perform and was deeply moved by their expressive and warm performances, leading to him writing this chorale work about the 'eternal bond' between a teacher and his students. The world premiere of this piece in Singapore by the Temasek Junior College Alumni Band was titled Echoes of Temasek - In Memory of Meastro Lin-sheng. For this publication, it has been revised and retitled Memories of the Past.Duration: 5.00

This salsa is a not-too-serious look at the shepherds and kings at the Christmas nativity scene. The shepherds are represented by the carol While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, appearing here in a minor key. They are a rather earthy crew as opposed to the more refined kings with their carol We Three Kings of Orient. At one point the shepherds try to show that they should not be underestimated with their allusion to Henry Purcell's song Nymphs and Shepherds but the arguments between the two groups continue to the very end.Technically the piece is not that difficult but it needs the appropriate rhythmic feel. There are several add-on latin percussion parts which are not essential but will add to the spirit of the music if you have the players available.Duration: 3.30

Rejoice! is a lateral look at the Advent hymn Veni, Veni Emmanuel (O come, o come Emmanuel). The hymn is a synthesis of the great 'O' Antiphons that are used for Vespers during the octave before Christmas (Dec. 17-23 Dec). These Antiphons are of ancient origin, dating back to at least the ninth century but the hymn itself is much more recent, first appearing in the 18th century in the Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum (Cologne 1710). This arrangement focuses on the 'Rejoice' motif and sets it in a rhythmic, folk-like setting, full of energy and verve.Duration: 3.30

Sing Lullaby, also known as The Infant King, is an arrangement of a Basque Carol. The words were translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) an Anglican priest and folk song collector. The melody was harmonized by the English organist and music editor Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) who included it with other Basque carols (also rendered by Sabine Baring-Gould) in The University Carol Book in 1922. I use a little of Pettman's harmony but also take a different look. I also set it in 3/4 time rather than Pettman's 6/8 (starting with an anacrusis) which allowed me more freedom of expression and a chance to use a few hemiolas in poignant moments. It is a beautiful, tender carol as befits a lullaby though not without a few suspensions which allude to the future trials of the Infant King described in Baring-Gould's words.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15
