A suite of five movements with different material. Each movement is associated through the use of one theme. The first, "Intrada," is fanfare-like, and the second, "Chorale," features a trumpet solo. "March," the third movement, is reminiscent of the opening material, followed by "Antique Dance," which has a modal melody. The final movement, "Jubilee," is clearly the most intense. The work is an Ostwald Award-Winning Composition of the American Bandmasters Association and is clearly a repertoire standard. Duration: 12.30

This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. Aroldo, number 22 of the 32 operas written by Verdi, is certainly not one of the best-known works from "the genius of Busseto." Written in 1857, it is in fact a remake of the 1848 opera Stiffelio, which told a story of adultery and which was censored for its "indecent" content. Verdi found the censorship of Stiffelio unacceptable, and with a performance in Verona approaching at the start of 1851, he wrote to his editor, Ricordi: "If my libretto is censored, it will not be possible to obtain the effect I desire, so I would rather wait until I can rewrite the last scene." But the modifications to Stiffelio did not stop there. The setting, the historical period and the finale were also completely changed. In the process of converting Stiffelio to Aroldo, Verdi no doubt succeeded in strengthening certain moments. However, the fame of the three operas he had written in the meantime - Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata - did not allow Aroldo to receive the recognition it deserved. The opera's symphony is indeed a superb work and contains moments of outstanding lyricism. The trumpet solo in the introduction is the longest written by Verdi for this instrument.Duration: 8:45

Engelberg Variations was composed for the Hibriten High School Band in Lenoir, North Carolina and is based on the hymn, "When In Our Music God Is Glorified." It opens with a flourish of activity from the brass and percussion. This gives way to the statement of the theme set in a lovely woodwind chorale featuring flutes and oboes. A lyrical trumpet solo takes the band to a soaring tutti statement of the theme which gets interrupted by a percussion-filled staccato variation.
