    Luna - Yukiko Nishimura

The title Luna is the Latin word for moon, which is the subject of this lyrical work by composer Yukiko Nishimura, originally composed for string orchestra. In a lilting waltz style, the composer has described the inspiration as imagining the sky with the moon at daytime. Nishimura's gift for melody shines throughout, especially in the middle section which includes lush passages in the upper winds with a delicate accompaniment. This new arrangement by the composer makes this beautiful work accessible to symphonic bands.

    Ascent

Ascent reflects the effort to get off the ground, literally or figuratively. It's a micro-overture that begins with the promise of upward transcendence, yet soon flies off into rogue disorganization. A raucous flock of notes finally converges into a united upward-headed murmuration, but the freedom of soaring through the sky brings an uneasy mystery before settling into the tranquil air of anticipation.

    Helios Rising - Todd Stalter

In Greek mythology, Helios is a Titan who faithfully drove the Sun's chariot across the sky each day, disappearing in the west into Oceanus (the ocean, which the Greeks believed encircled the Earth), and rising out of it again in the east the next morning. Helios' journey at sunrise is referenced musically by the ascending leap in the main theme and the strong driving rhythms of the low winds and percussion. The contrasting light and dark textures in the slow section depict twilight inevitably giving way to the darkness of night. (2:45)

    The Wrangler - Carter Pann

The Wrangler was written for the James Logan High School wind ensemble (Ramiro Barrera, director) in 2006. The work is evocative of the great old Westerns with Big Sky and grand symphonic music. "The hero is a good man, a free man - very confident and very competent with his stallion and lasso," says the composer, and The Wrangler describes our hero galloping across the breathtaking landscape, encountering a drunken dance at a saloon, avoiding a fight, and more, all packed within an eight-minute envelope. For advanced bands.

Eye of the Hawk - Susan Botti

Eye of the Hawk was inspired by the beautiful and majestic Hudson Valley. I wanted to base the piece on something that would resonate with the band who would be premiering it ... my local, exceptional, middle school band. The hawkbecame our spirit animal, and represented to me many of the qualities that are inherent in a young person of that age - bold, instinctive, elegant - a fierce creature who owns the sky. The music conveys power, freedom, andconfidence. Just like the students. -Susan Botti. A free downloadable interdisciplinary curriculum for teaching Eye of the Hawk is available for download at www.BandQuest.org. Learn more on YouTube! Spirit of the Winds - Robert W. Smith

Spirit of the Winds, a concert/festival work for the developing band, was inspired by the beautiful Temecula Valley of California. Each year, the sky over the valley is filled with hot air balloons creating a visual sight that is not soon forgotten. Of course, balloons are unable to "steer" and must fly with the gentle breezes of the air current. As a result, those subject to the "spirit of the winds" can find themselves over festival grounds or floating above the beautiful Temecula Valley vineyards. Beginning with a bold, yet mysterious statement, the introduction gives way to a soaring melody as our flight begins. Cascading figures in the woodwinds create the effect of wind currents followed by a beautiful secondary melodic statement. The original theme returns leading to a very energetic conclusion. Accessible to a wide range of concert bands, Spirit of the Winds provides multiple teaching opportunities and will be enjoyed by both performer and audience.
