£164.95SUITE OF ENGLISH FOLKDANCES (Symphonic WB) - Tomlinson, Ernest
Score & Parts. In 1951 Ernest Tomlinson, at the invitation of his sister Freda, attended a Festival of Dance and Song presented by the English Folk Dance and Song Society. He was so captivated by the tunes danced to, that he resolved to write an orchestral suite based on some of them. The composer's arrangement for wind band follows closely the textures and colour contrasts of the orchestral original. The Suite, which is dedicated to his sister, is in six movements, all the tunes being selected from the first edition of John Playford's The English Dancing Master. Includes: Jenny Pluck Pears; Ten Pound Lass; Dick's Maggot; Nonesuch; Hunt the Squirrel; Woodicock. Duration: 12 mins.

£115.60Romjulsdrm - Thoralf Borg
The poem Romjulsdrm ("Christmas Dream") was first published in Arbeiderbladet on January 3rd 1959, and became known when Thoralf Borg set a melody to it in 1968. Up until this, Alf Prysen had used a melody quite similar to the song Lijan uti dalen, when he sang the song in the TV program Ei vise vil jeg synge in 1964. At the same time that Borg's melody was written, the last four lines of text were also added to the poem, and the song took on the form we know today.The form and structure of this arrangement originates from a version for big band and vocals commissioned by stre Toten Storband, written in 2018 for one of their traditional midnight concerts on the day before Christmas. In an attempt to give the arrangement a nice calm and the text a lot of room, as is often the case in songs like this, it ended up in a relatively narrative style where the variation in tempo and the shifts between swing and straight eighth notes are particularly central.The song is about family, friendship and the quiet days of the Christmas holidays, which hopefully is something most people can recognise. The arrangement for the aforementioned midnight concert was ordered because my sister was to be the soloist for the concert, and since my father also played lead trombone - as he has done in this big band for as long as I can remember - it was natural to add a small trombone solo as well. It's always special to write and arrange music for people I know and appreciate, but it's extra special when it's also for two of my great role models.- David Stre Hveem -

This work was commissioned by the Lampasas High School Band, Lampasas, Texas, Richard Hooper, Director, in memory of their classmate and friend, Chris Cruz, and his father and sister. Chris was a saxophone player, Eagle Scout and junior in high school. He was a much-loved member of the high school band and this work was commissioned in honor and memory of him. The title refers to Chris favorite time of the year: the end of summer, band camp, the start of school, the start of fall, football games, band competitions and all the other fun times that come along for high school band students "as the days become shorter." Energetic and driving, much like the life that Chris lived, this work is meant to be a celebration of his life and spirit.

"By the Fjord" is written by the Norwegian composer Kjetil Bjrnstad and is the most famous song from the musical work "Leve Patagonia" which was published in 1978. The work is written as a modern suite about the Oslo Bohemians Hans Jaeger and OdaLasson sitting in a pram on the fjord a summer night. Odas sister sees the couple on the sea from her window and tells us the story.Kjetil Bjrnstad wrote "By the Fjord" in his house outside Tvedestrand early spring 1978. He was initially notfully satisfied and considered disposing it. The beautiful music has luckily made the song a classic in Norwegian music.To the conductorThis arrangement can be used with both vocal andinstrumental soloist. Its always a challenge toarrange songs with many verses that tells a story if it is to be played by an instrumental soloist instead of a singer. The Roman Emperor Tiberius was born in 42 BCE to Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusilla, both descendants of prestigious political families, at a time when Rome was undergoing significant political upheaval. Julius Caesar had begun a brutal civil war in 49 BCE to end Rome's rule as a Republic and consolidate his power as supreme ruler. Following Caeser's assassination in 44 BCE, Tiberius' father backed the forces wishing to return Rome to a Republic, but they were defeated by Caesarian loyalists led by Caeser's heir Octavian. As a result, Tiberius' early life was spent on the run and in political exile with his parents. In 27 BCE, Octavian would become the first Emporer of Rome and assume the name Augustus. Augustus forced Tiberius' parents to divorce and took Tiberius' mother as his new bride, separating the family and forcing Tiberius to live with his father. Upon his father's death, Tiberius went to live with his mother and Emporer Augustus, a situation Tiberius found extremely uncomfortable but one over which he had no control. Having been adopted by the Emperor, Tiberius assumed the military and political life thrust upon him. He proved to be an outstanding military and political leader, and with his marriage to Vipsania Agrippina his life took on a heretofore unknown stability. However, Augustus would intervene in Tiberius' life once more, forcing him to abandon his happy marriage and take Augustus' daughter Julia (Tiberius' step sister) as his new wife. This arrangement, while securing Tiberius' place as Augustus' heir and ensuring he would one day be Emperor of Rome, was disastrous. Julia's drunken licentiousness was a constant source of scandal and embarrassment for Tiberius (and her father, the Emperor) and she was eventually exiled by her father Augustus. Tiberius was named Emperor of Rome upon the death of Augustus in AD 14, assuming his position as the most powerful man on Earth. However, no matter how powerful he had become, Tiberius never felt as if he had ever had any control over his life, having been manipulated from childhood through adulthood by the whims of Augustus. As Emperor, he soon became disgusted with the political intrigue of the Roman Senate and by AD 26 left Rome and took up residence on the island of Capri, where he lived out the rest of his life. History does not regard Tiberius fondly and by all accounts towards the end of his reclusive life on Capri, he had become a miserable, sick and mentally unstable old man reveling in debauchery and cruelty. It is also informative to note that he was Emperor of Rome when Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, and while there is no indication that Tiberius was even aware of the existence of Jesus, as Emperor he was responsible for the appointment of Pontius Pilate as Governor of Judea. Even considering this, it is difficult to look on the life of the Emperor Tiberius and not feel some sympathy and pity. It's in this spirit that I composed "The Dream of Tiberius." I imagine the man sitting in thoughtful seclusion on the beautiful island of Capri imagining what his life might have happily been had not power been thrust upon him: husband, father and humble servant of the people.

For more than a hundred years, the matreshka dolls have been a traditional trademark of Russia. The story behind these dolls is that many years ago, a little Russian girl, Olga, got lost in a forest. When her older sister finally found her, she said, ?Let me hold you.? Next, their mother also arrived, and said, ?Let me hold you both.? Subsequently, the grandmother joined them, and said, ?Let me hold you all.? As a result of this story, these popular ?nesting dolls? came into being. The work Matreshka consists of originally-composed themes. The first theme, reminiscent of a Russian hymn, is followed by another theme in a typically Russian style. A slow passage forms thetransition to the final, energetic movement ? this Russian troika in two-four time starts slowly and ends very exuberantly. A great piece of Russian exuberance that will delight any audience.
