Tales & Legends - Etienne Crausaz

This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back!

Concertino for Percussion and Band - Menno Bosgra

This three-part work was commissioned by Kunstfactor--the Dutch Institute for Amateur Art. Its purpose is to further the repertoire for solo percussionist and orchestral accompaniment--whether brass band, fanfare orchestra or wind band. For a good performance, the soloist should be well-versed in a variety of techniques, and should have a good understanding of the instruments not only technically, but also musically. In terms of the selection of instruments and also technique, the first and second movement are more classical in style, while the final movement--with a set-up of various so-called 'untuned' instruments--is more suited to contemporarysolo kit playing. These distinctions will become clear to the soloist while studying the piece. (Menno Bosgra)Movement One requires timpani and tambourine;Movement Two requires marimba and vibraphone;Movement Three is a set-up of: five untuned drums (bongos and toms), large drum (standing), large floor drum or smaller bass drum (lying down), cowbell on a stand, suspended cymbals, Chinese cymbal and small drum.

Song for Sakiko - Bert Appermont

Bert Appermont composed Song for Sakiko during a stay in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo. "Sakiko" roughly translated means "flower child" and is associated with a dreamy, poetic atmosphere. Appermont used theseassociations as a starting point while composing. Song for Sakiko starts with a very lyrical theme based on a minor third that forms the basis for the entire work. A second theme builds up to the grand finale, which repeats the theme, but in amajor key and the music slowly fades away, like ripples on a pond, as both themes can be heard dissipating into nothingness.

    Moretus - Bart Picqueur

Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law, the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn's death in 1589 Moretus took over the business. The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.Part 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale. In the second part, ExpressiveImpressions, the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial, mechanical nature of the process, the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension. In the third part, Impressive Expression, the wind band is invited (or challenged), to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness. Part 4, A Gentle Celebration, is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

In addition to 4 piano concertos Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) also wrote some symphonies. The clarinet solo from the adagio in his second symphony opus 27 is probably one of the most beautiful melodies from this period.

Concerto for Horn and Band - Bert Appermont

Concerto for Horn and Band was written on commission from the horn player Miguel Martinez Megias and the symphonic concert band La Armnica from Buol, Spain. This four-movement work, written to fully explore the capabilities of the hornas a solo voice, is comprised of a dramatic Sarabande, a highly virtuoso Toccata, a wonderful Romance and a Finale that reworks the second movement in a kind of fugue and brings the work to a spectacular close. The basicbuilding block of this concerto, quite fittingly, is the fifth: you only have to think of the post horn or a hunting theme, which conjures up the sound of the perfect fifth. Wonderful new repertoire for a wonderful instrument.
