Hectala is the historical place name of the Belgian-Limburgish village of Hechtel where, during the Second World War, the Welsh Guards were engaged in a five-day battle with the German troops. More than 200 soldiers and 35 inhabitants perished. This classical, steady march in 6/8 time was written as a memorial to these events. It sends a powerful message that in war, there are no winners.

Inferno in the Lost Pines - Larry Clark
Larry Clark does it again, with a bold new piece for young students, using only the first 6 notes of the Bb scale and two eighth notes on the same pitch as the most difficult rhythm. The piece is meant to depict the struggle that firefighters go through when trying to tame an out of control brush fire. The piece goes right into the main theme without introduction and then moves into a more subdued second theme, in contrast. After a short development of the themes with interplay between the winds and percussion, the piece builds to a strong coda: a great way to showcase your beginning band at a concert or festival.

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! What a great combination - a locomotive chugging out of the station, gradually gaining speed, and the great American 12-bar blues form. This fun piece is loaded with special effects including a second percussion part with anvil, triangle, and suspended cymbal to simulate the sound of the train. The band adds a shhh to help generate more steam and excitement. A great crowd-pleaser!

Call to Glory - Elliot Del Borgo
This extensive, processional-like piece is an easy grade 2 and will work nicely as either a contest warm-up or impressive concert finale. Most of the low brass and woodwinds are scored together and the second clarinet remains below the break. Eb is the highest pitch for trumpet.
