Capturing the Blue Riband - Scott Watson
"Capturing the Blue Riband" musically celebrates the excitement and sense of occasion experienced when traveling aboard the grand, early 20th century transatlantic liners, such as the Queen Mary and Lusitania. The Blue Riband was the coveted trophy bestowed on the vessel that clocked the fastest transatlantic time. The energetic opening and closing sections of this piece evoke the exhilaration of taking to the sea in this historic race of prestige, while a contrasting section conveys the sense of grandeur and honor central to the era and the award. Annabel Lee
Scored in a lilting three-quarter meter, this delicious melody, by an unknown composer, was originally scored to accompany Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name. The story is of the narrator's deep love for a woman who lived by the sea, and whose untimely death is mourned every night by the narrator as he sleeps next to her tomb by the ocean. The beautiful melody, charismatically harmonized, musically depicts that undying love and provides a meaningful opportunity to teach expressive and lyrical performance. A charming addition to the developing band repertoire. (2:15) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Scirocco - Roland Barrett
"Scirocco" comes from the name given to a Mediterranean wind that originates as a dry and dusty breeze in the Sahara Desert, accumulates moisture and velocity as it crosses the Mediterranean Sea, and often reaches hurricane speeds. With an inspiration like that, you can be sure the energy level will be at a peak. The work has an elementary introduction to contemporary aleatoric notation that enhances the dynamic sparkle! Overture for Symphonic Band - Bin Kaneda
Overture for Symphonic Band was composed in 1970 by Bin Kaneda at the request of the Yamaha Concert Band. This music was first performed by the Yamaha Concert Band at their regular spring concert in 1971 in Tokyo. The Overture is comprised of two movements - Andante and Allegro. The idea for the theme of the Allegro came to the composer during a Fall festival of the village in Shikoku Island, along the coast of the Inland Sea where he spent two years of his childhood. The Yamaha Concert Band won the Gold Medal award with the performance of this music at the All Japan Band Concert in the Fall of 1971.

Aquatica - Scott Watson
This composition opens atmospherically in tranquil beauty---like a serene lake, a calm sea, or an eerie underwater scene. After a brief, meditative transition scored for four solo instruments, the piece bursts into a spirited 6/8 theme that suggests both water creatures and craft moving playfully through the waves.
