Caribbean Sunrise Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The brilliant sun, the blue sea, and the white beaches. The Caribbean Islands hold a great attraction for holidaymakers. Water sports enthusiasts can swim, sail, and dive to their hearts' content and the wonderful coral reefs are a must. In this composition, Johan Nijs depicts the atmosphere of the Caribbean. The first part describes dawn and the long awakening of the group of islands after a sultry night. A few hours later things are full of vitality again with the calypso in full swing. 0:03:15

    Castles of Llyr

A distinctive work inspired by folklore surrounding Llyr, the Welsh God of the Sea. A powerful, grandiose opening sets the scene for the exciting yet mysterious allegro of quickly changing instrumental colors. A slow and dramatic section follows, building gradually to an explosive return to the allegro. Great student and audience appeal. Rated as a definite "pick'' for contest.

CATCHER OF SHADOWS (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wilby, Philip

Catcher of Shadows was written in celebration of the work of photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe who lived and worked in the Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. His work is largely of the sea, its tall ships and the people that live by and from it. The world which he catalogued is gone into our Romantic heritage, and a true northern nostalgia is one of the strongest flavours of his work. The music has sought to catch the flavour as well as some of the substance of his original work, even though particular photographs are directly connected with particular parts of the music. Duration: 15 mins.

Columbus Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father's footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, which he sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the 'New World' - he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvo??k's 9th Symphony 'Aus der neuen Welt' forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid. 09:00

East Coast Pictures (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hess, Nigel

These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.Movement 1: Shelter Island is a small island situated near the end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island.Movement 2: In upstate New York lie the Catskills Mountains--an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen, they call you back again and again.Movement 3: New York - or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come!Duration: 16.00

    El Arco De Los Cabos

This exciting paso doble is named for the famous "Arch of Los Cabos" found at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula. This natural stone arch is a landmark where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet. Commissioned for the Five-States Honor Band in Guymon, Oklahoma, this work features bold brass statements contrasted with lyrical woodwind lines and dynamic Latin percussion reinforcement. "El Arco de Los Cabos" is destined to become a paso doble standard in contemporary band literature. Great contest or concert opener/closer!

JOURNEY THROUGH A JAPANESE LANDSCAPE (Percussion Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Musgrave, Thea

Concerto for Solo Marimba and Wind Orchestra. The four movements of Journey through a Japanese Landscape are based on a series of haiku which represents an emotional journey through the four seasons. The three haiku chosen for each of the seasons provide a setting and an event; thus, the gently undulating spring sea is the background for the free, improvisatory character of the skylark. The summer grasses have buried the glorious dreams of ancient warriors and after a violent storm, a distant memory of a march is heard. An autumnal fog envelops a colossal Buddha and a lonely watcher sounds one gong after another while a cricket acts as a grave keeper. Glass wind chimes introduce the frozen winter landscape. The march returns, then sleet and snow build to a big storm. Out of the silence that follows, echoes of the first movement suggest the return of spring and so, rebirth. (Grade 4) Duration: 23:00
