I Love the 207 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sakai, Itaru
I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people's faces.Duration: 5:00

Deliverance (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Crausaz, Etienne
Deliverance is an exciting concert suite by Etienne Crausaz. The first movement is in the style of a siciliana, starting out quiet and calmly, then slowly building in excitement and energy. The second movement, a scherzo, allows for colourful sounds and timbres and is full of humorous musical elements and contrasts. The third movement, the vivace, presents a dialogue between the higher and lower registers of the band with plenty of time changes. Deliverance is an action-packed composition, full of colour and contrast.Duration: 11.00

Andante e Alla Marcia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dvorak, Antonin - De Meij, Johan
Dvorak's Symphony No.4 (1874) was a pivotal work in the career of this famous Bohemian composer. In the work Dvorak is finally freed from the influence of other composers and succeeds in producing a work in his own unique style. The slow introduction of the second movement (Andante sostenuto e molto cantabile) however clearly showed the influence of Wagner's Tannhauser, but the l'Alla Marcia du Scherzo is again typical Dvorak. You can also hear the obvious references to the traditional music of Bohemia which played an important part in late works of Dvorvak. A terrific classical work for your concert repertoire. Manhattan (Trumpet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their solo trumpet player Woodrow English, and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003. The two movement work demonstrates both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player. The 'theme' is a weekend in New York and the opening bluesy movement, Saturday Serenade, describes the city on a Saturday night, perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While writing Sunday Scherzo, the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park. This vivaciously rhythmic second movement ends with an even quicker coda bringing the work to a brilliant close. Each movement can also be played individually when a shorter solo is required. Manhattan is a major work in the solo trumpet repertoire.Duration: 9:30

Fifth Symphony (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barnes, James
Commissioned in 2000 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band in 1951 at the conclusion of Allied occupation. Scored for a very large band, including six antiphonal trumpets, the work is in four movements: I. Eulogy, II. Scherzo, III. Reverie, and IV. Jubilation. Subtitled Phoenix, the composer writes: Like the legendary Phoenix bird, which self-immolates, then arises from its own ashes more resplendent than ever, Japan has recovered from the massive devastation of World War II to become a greater and more respected nation than ever before. Sinfonietta No.3 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.Duration: 18:20

CANYONS (Novello Symphonic) Extra Score - McCabe, John
Extra Score. Canyons is a response to the imposing landscape of the American South West, an exploration of musical ideas. The piece falls into four main sections. Following a build-up in the brass and woodwind, there is a slowish first section with massive chords, percussive pounding and some contrapuntal development of the work's main thematic idea. This is followed by a brief scherzo and then a slow movement which again derives from chordal material and another contrapuntal development. The fourth section is an extended Allegro Vivace, dominated by a dance-like theme introduced by the trumpets and an important motif heard at the start by the brass and percussion. After the final climax, the Adagio epilogue leads the music to a quiet close, the solo piccolo restating the cornet figure heard at the opening of the work. (Grade 4.5) Duration: 15 mins. Recorded on QPRM127D Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.4 (Guildhall Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Peter Gane)
