Farewell Song has been taken from Der Trompetervon S?ckingen by Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884, thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos, drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today, only the farewell song called JungWerner's Abschied, also known as Beh?t' dich Gott,has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. This work takes inspiration from photos taken at the Karman Line (an invisible line 100 kilometres above sea level and is the boundary where the atmosphere of Earth ends, and outer space begins). It portrays the vastness of Space, the mechanics of Space (including shuttles and astronauts), as well as stunning views of the Earth. The main thematic material for the piece is modal, and is developed from key pitches and intervals that define the character and nature of the mixolydian mode. These are gradually introducted as accented notes over the opening ostinato. This modal music is gradually juxtaposed with a more conventional minor scale originally creating conflict and tension, but eventually harmony between these two sound-worlds. Inspired by the composer's stay in Utqiagvik, Alaska, this composition musically illustrates scenes from these carvings thatdepict a day of Alaskan fishing. £36.95Winter Scene (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A depiction of a cold, snowbound winter scene. This work was written shortly after the composer I finished a little piece called Summer Song. Winter Scene originally started life as a guitar piece but was expanded in several ways when casting it for wind band. Without looking for specific imagery, the composer imagined something like the snowbound scenes found in the Renaissance art of Pieter Breugel the Elder d. 1569. The music begins with some icy dissonance in the brass before the slow processional of the tune is first stated. There is some contrasting material in the middle which changes colour and key before the main theme returns with its slightly acerbic accompaniment.Duration: 3.30

In 1934, the city of Melbourne celebrated its centenary and marked the occasion with the MacRobertson International Air Race. KLM's entry was its first DC-2, PH-AJU Uiver (Stork), which took off on 20 October 1934. Shortly before the finish, the plane had to make an emergency landing due to poor weather conditions. The following morning, the entire town turned out to dig the aircraft out of the mud, enabling to resume its flight. Nonetheless, the distance was covered in three days, 18 hours and 17 minutes: a winning performance! This programmatic piece tells the story describing the start of the engines in bar one, the flight over the clouds, the thunderstorm, the emergency landing and many more scenes!Duration: 9.30
