George Gershwin is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. His works include classical compositions, musicals and soundtracks which often employ elements of jazz. Many of his melodies have became jazz classics. In this enjoyable GERSWHINPORTRAIT Luigi di Ghisallo assembled three of Gershwin's most popular melodies: "Rhapsody in Blue", his best-known classical work, "Summertime", a famous song from the opera "Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" from the soundtrack of "ADamsel in Distress".

Forest of Tranquility is our newest work in our very beginning band series. Like all of our compositions in this performance level, your students can play this within the first few months of study. Thus, getting in a very early concert and keeps kids in the band program. This is a gentle sounding song starting in a minor mode, moving to its relative major and back to minor, a sound not often heard for a beginning band at this level. Clarinets do not cross the break. One can easily imagine in the days of Castes and Kings, how this composition may spark the feeling of what it may have been like for Knights of the Kingdoms to not only protect the Lords of the Castle, but also be chivalrous to the Ladies of the Court. Dancing at the feasts and festivals, escorting the royalty to various events. Knights had much more to do than fight. They were allowed to have fun. Sometimes. Like all of our Grade compositions, its main purpose besides giving good and interesting music for young musicians to play, is that it is an opportunity for the band director to teach some aspect of music. This is a great composition for introducing eighth notes and following dynamics. No clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is A (in the staff). Everyone plays rhythmically together. Only the drum part may vary. All chords of the diatonic scale are used to make the harmony more interesting with no accidentals.

Ever Forward, Ever Onward is a wonderful piece written in concert B-flat and only uses notes within the scale. The clarinets do not go over the break. If students have been playing for at least a semester, this piece will be just challenging enough to make them want to work, but not so hard that they give up.
