The Paris born composer and pianist Serge Lancen (1922-2005) studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town and was awarded a Prix de Rome. Lancen composed symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos. In 1960 he met his ancient study friend Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band, who incited him to write for symphonic band. Lancen wrote an impressive series of wind band works that earned him an international reputation. Among his most successful compositions are Manhattan Symphony (1962) an Cape Kennedy (1970), but we should not forget that Lancen also wrote several fine works for symphonic bands of average level. So he did in 1976 by writing two rhapsodies based respectively on Breton and Normandy themes. The Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy was recorded in 1977 on a long playing record by the French National Police Band conducted by Pierre Bigot alongside with Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Hymne la Musique and Rapsodie sur des Thmes Breton. Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy is a piece that is characterized by an original orchestration and fluent melodic lines, two main characters of Lancen's music.

£140.80Concerto for Trumpet and Band - Mary Jeanne Van Appledorn
Dedicated to Robert Mayes and Richard E. Tolley. The part for solo trumpet is delivered in B-flat nd C. The B-flat part incorporates the use of B-flat Fl: ugelhorn in the second movement, but the C part is entirely for trumpet in C for the convenience of those players who prefer the C instrument. The composer, however, prefers the use of the B-flat flgelhorn as marked at the beginning of the second movement and where marked thereafter in the second movement only. Therefore, the solo part may be played in any one of the following ways: 1) on B-flat trumpet and B-flat flgelhorn, in accordance with the composer's original intentions; 2; entirely on B-flat trumpet; or 3) entirely on C trumpet

£90.30Western Sax Duo - Uri Hodorov
This composition, which puts the spotlight on the alto and tenor saxophone(s), is a real acquisition for the original repertoire. Uri Hodorov wrote it in 1998. Besides the saxophones, the flutes, the complete clarinet family and the snare drum also boast solo parts. Some exhalation effects, produced by all the members of the band, cause some strange effects. No doubt, here you have an original composition, which will please both the musicians and the audience.

£61.00Anchors Aweigh (in Swing) - C. Zimmermann
Charles Zimmerman (1862-1916) was 'bandmaster' at the U.S. Naval Academy during thirty years. He wrote his famous march Anchors aweigh at the request of the Academy's Senior Class in 1907. They asked him for a stirring inspiring march that could also be used as 'war song' for their (American) football team and ... that could also maybe remain popular for some time. This turned out to become true. Pi Scheffer's splendid swinging arrangement combining a Dixieland combo and symphonic band was a big success when recorded by the Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Navy and the Dutch Swing College Band.

£253.70Rainforest Concerto - Saskia Apon
Rainforest Concerto has been commissioned by the Brass Band Rijnmond. This double concerto for two trombones and wind band consists of three parts with the cadenza in the slow niddle movement. Saskia Apon was inspired by the threat of the destruction of the rainforest. In the first part, Creation, we hear an accelerated reproduction of the birth of this impressive natural phenomenon. We hear the first birds, we see the growth of the mangrove trees and we witness the struggle for light and the force necessary to keep the realized equilibrium in a perpetual balance. The second part, Ode, is a tribute to the wonder and splendour of the rainforest. By means of subtle and extremely delicate sonorities we hear how nature adds an inestimable value to the rainforest. However it is also extremely fragile and this engenders a certain melancholy due to the awareness of man's impotence to respect this beautiful nature. In the last part, Contra Demolition, we hear the threatening decline, but also the revolt against this possible ruin. It is a heartfelt cry to leave nuture in peace and to work hard for the preservation of the beauty and the value of the rainforest.
