£179.99The Planetarium - Philip Sparke
The Planetarium was commissioned by CMV Advendo Franeker to celebrate their 100th Anniversary in 2022. The inspiration for the work is the world-famous Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium in the orchestra's home town of Franeker in the Netherlands. In this continuous seven-movement work, the composer pictures the sun as well as the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Also featured throughout the work is a brief quotation from the chorale 'Psalm 150'. A work that rises above the mundane!

Elegy & Scherzo was written at the request of cellist Yuki Ito, to commemorate the 150th birthyear in 2023 of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943). Composer Johan de Meij used some hints and quotes from Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (opus 27) and the Symphonic Dances (opus 45), to embrace the sound world of the Russian master. Elegy & Scherzo was premiered on October 27, 2023, in the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia by the Band of the Slovenian Armed Forces, with Yuki Ito as the cello soloist and the composer conducting.

"Some kind of Dj Vu" is a continuation of the piece "Time for Celebration", written for Sreide & Sandsli Skolekorps's (SSS) Junior Band in 2015.The theme and motif is based on the band's initials "SSS", three similar tones (translated to the sheet music).The motif is played either separately as a signal, or as the beginning of the main melody.The title refers to the term 'Dj Vu', which is a feeling of having experienced something in the past (which one actually experiences for the first time).In this case, it's the musical and thematic reference to "Time for Celebration" that appears as the "Dj Vu" experience.

Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) was a German opera composer of Jewish origins, who has been described as perhaps the most successful stage composer of the nineteenth century. From 1831 until his death, he remained a dominating figure in the world of opera. His contemporary Hector Berlioz summed up his public career claiming that he 'has not only the luck of being talented, but the talent to be lucky'. His works made him the most frequently performed composer at the world's leading opera houses in the nineteenth century. Giacomo Meyerbeer composed his opera Le Prophte in 1849. In this opera a coronation is preceded by a splendid march. Although the opera itself is rarely performed, the Coronation March has gained a place in the concert repertoire.Franco Cesarini's arrangement for concert band of the Coronation March stands out for its skillful instrumentation which underlines the powerful sounds of this classic concert march.

(Mahler over zijn 2de symfonie "Wederopstanding", Juli 1894)*"You are clubbed to the ground and then lifted to the highest heights on angels' wings"Commissioned by and dedicated to Concertband Maasmechelen (BE), conducted by Mark Prils.Kevin Houben was inspired for this work by Gustav Mahler's 2nd symphony, better known as the Resurrection symphony.The work can be regarded as a Ma(h)lerei of various compositional and spherical elements that refer to the Austrian composer but that appear in this composition in an embedded, contemporary way.As Mahler often drew his inspiration from nature, the opening of this piece brings nature right to the audience. The work starts with a solo for alto flute accompanied by a pedal note in four octaves with harmonic responses echoing the solo.From the start, Kevin Houben provides Mahler's material with a contemporary touch. He replaces the nature sounds that Mahler uses (perfect fourth) with tritone intervals. The off stage trumpet signals have been preserved but are provided with a new accompaniment. Gradually, throughout the work, the orchestra undergoes its own independent development. Mahler's musical signature remains recognizable, but Kevin Houben allows it - e.g. through the use of various timbres - to flourish in a more modern musical idiom, which characterizes numerous contemporary compositions for wind band (cfr. Where Angels Fly).The work comes to a grandiose end with a passage of the famous chorale from Mahler's 2nd symphony. The rich orchestration of this chorale gives the listener the illusion of the presence of a choir and organ without actually using them.In Resurrection, each instrument group comes into its own: in solo fragments, in transparent thematic passages or in splendid tuttis. Therefore, the work forms an interesting challenge for a wind band on several levels, both technically and melodically - the latter due to the long suspenseful melodic phrases that the musical structure requires.The piece is accessible to a wide audience and can be regarded as an enrichment for any concert programme. Resurrection takes the audience through various atmospheres and experiences: from stunning to chilling, from calming to delighting...Die Musik muss immer ein Sehnen enthalten, ein Sehnen ber die Dinge dieser Welt hinaus." Since 2006, he has worked as composer, orchestrator and arranger for international film and concert productions. In 2010, the London Symphony Orchestra recorded his violin concerto at Abbey Road studios. His film music for Hero and A Father's Job won numerous international prizes. He was awarded a gold record in 2022 as arranger for Alex Christensen.

£78.50Bleak Forest - Andreas Ziegelbäck
Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022.Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales... don't they?Andreas Ziegelbck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universitt, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbck's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.
