The River and the Rock (The Tale of a City) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shaffer, David

The River and the Rock depicts the rich history of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, settled in 1735. Each short movement paints a musical picture of the city's history, opening with "Beginnings," depicting a frontier that was settled very slowly as hostilities between England and France encouraged Indian bounty hunters to attack isolated garrisons in the region. "Patriots" suggests the city's call to arms throughout history. "Prosperity" visits the industrial revolution and the city's rapid growth at the turn of the 20th century. Movement IV and V, "Decline" and "Revival," offer a musical insight into the city's decline throughout the 20th century and rebirth in the 21st century. Exciting and emotional, "The River and the Rock" merges history and music into a setting that your students will enjoy preparing. Excellent selection for festivals and contests! Duration: 6.15

Popov's Parade (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stubbs, Duncan

Combining references to 20th-century Russian music with slapstick humour, Popov's Parade is a humble tribute to a great international artist, Oleg Popov, one of the world's best-known clowns. The quote from Schubert's March Militaire parodies Stravinsky's use of this same fragment in his own Circus Polka.

Farandole (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bizet, Georges - Wiffin, Rob

In taking a lateral look at Bizet's famous Farandole, I decided to omit the full opening statement of the old Provencal tune Marcho dei Rei (March of the Kings), opting instead to make oblique references to it. The combination of this old Christmas song with another traditional Provencal Melody Danso dei Chivau-Frus (Dance of the Hobbyhorse) originally made by Bizet's friend Ernest Guiraud when he compiled Suite No.2 from Bizet's music to the play L'Arlesienne. The farandole is a traditional Provencal dance in which men and women hold hands in a chain and wind through the streets following a musician playing pipe and tabor. In the case of Danso dei Chivau-Frus, the lead dancer would wear a horse's head made of papier mache or something similar.I have attempted to stay true to the spirit of the Farandole and the contrapuntal devices added by Guirand while adding a few touches of interest and harmonic colour here and there.- Rob Wiffin

Dutch Masters Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan

For this exciting work Johan de Meij took his inspiration from Rembrandt's The Night Watch, Vermeer's Love Letter and Steen's Prinsjesdag. In the first movement the solo trombone keeps watch at night, whilst in the second movement lyrical lute music accompanies Vermeer's Love Letter. The third movement takes place in a tavern, where the drinking, singing and (increasingly inarticulate) music take place. An epilogue from the watchful trombone brings the piece to a peaceful end. This work by Johan de Meij was the set-piece for 2nd division concert bands at the 16th WMC in Kerkrade 2009. Duration: 21.00

Eternal Vigilance (The Long Brave Line) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jager, Robert

The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," and a variation of the West Point motto, "The Long Gray Line." Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the "noble" theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close.Duration: 8:30

Ch'ella mi Creda (Trombone or Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Puccini, Giacomo - De Meij, Johan

Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano is the last aria that tenor-role Dick Johnson (the bandit Ramerrez) sings before his death sentence is carried out. Puccini's opera La Fanciulla del West is set in America's Wild West. The impressionistic-inspired opera separates this opera from most of Puccini's other works. Johan de Meij's arrangement uses the solo trombone in the role of the bandit Ramerrez. Duration: 2.30

Another World's Hell - Simon Dobson

Another World's Hell is inspired by a passage in Aldous Huxley's classic 1932 science-fiction novel Brave New World, which describes in unusually close detail the music that is being played at a dance. Shakespeare Pictures - Nigel Hess

While Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nigel Hess wrote music for over twenty productions. Hess has taken music from three works to form a 12-minute suite called Shakespeare Pictures. It begins with the boisterous overture to Much Ado About Nothing, followed by a contrasting slow movement depicting the beautiful statue from A Winter's Tale before displaying huge pomp of Caesar's Rome with The Entry to the Senate. This work is ideal for bands that have played and enjoyed Hess's work East Coast Pictures. This wind band suite was commissioned in 2008 by Birmingham Symphonic Winds. The original music is now expanded and re-orchestrated to form a new three-movement suite for symphonic wind orchestra.
