Franois Glorieux was born in Belgium in 1932, and acclaimed throughout Europe, the USA, Latin America, Canada, Japan, China, the Middle East and Africa. He is one of the most widely accomplished and versatile musicians traveling the international circuit today: pianist composer conductor, commentator, entertainer, honorary professor of chamber music at the Royal Music Conservatory of Ghent and guest professor at Yale University (USA). His particular art was the rare one of improvisation presented in five languages. Glorieux practices all musical styles and has been highly considered by great artists such as Andr Cluytens, Arthur Rubinstein, Yves Nat, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Enrique Jorda, Raphael Frhbeck de Burgos, but also Michael Jackson, Stan Kenton, Stphane Grappelli, Paul McCartney, Toots Thielemans, Jacky Collins, Annie Girardot, Dionne Warwick, A.C. Jobim, and so on.

Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force, 'Scramble!' is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain, immortalised for ever in such films as 'Reach for theSky'. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is, of course, deceptive, suddenly amid siren sounds, there is a shoutof 'Scramble!', and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne, heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillnessmanypilots described as they flew to engage the enemy, before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned, it would be only a short while before, once again, they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'

£224.99Les Marteaux de la Marine - Rob Goorhuis
Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive, while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title.The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection, the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently, the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next, the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.

£244.99Variations on a Pentatonic Theme - Rob Goorhuis
Rob Goorhuis wrote his Variations on a Pentatonic Theme (1987) for the Royal Wind band of Thorn, conductor Jan Cober. The work consists of five character variations on a pentatonic (five-tone) theme. The basic elements of the theme are the descending minor third and the descending major second, which in the course of the composition build up to a broad melody, unfolding itself in the final variation. The first variation resembles minimal music in its repetitive rhythmic motives. The second variation is explosive in character: rapid broken chords provide a background for soft solo motifs. The third variation is a quiet intermezzo on a slow chorale theme, creatingtwo contrasting moods. The fourth variation is a light-hearted scherzo. The final variation is a brilliant finale with all the necessary ingredients, or, in the composer's words, "the works" Testpiece WMC 2005 Concert Division.

Concerto for Trombone" was written especially for Jrgen van Rijen, the solo trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. It is a composition without a story, consisting of four overlapping parts. The solo part was not written for Jrgen van Rijen technical skills, but rather for his expressive technique in the higher registers. According to Jan Bosveld, Jrgen van Rijen has additional merits that distinguish him from all other trombonists. "Concerto for Trombone" was premiered at the International Music Festival in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.The Reprsentations Orchester des Schweizer Armeespiel, conducted by Christopher Walter, accompanied him. This composition was made financially possible by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Special thanks goes to mr. Bert Aalders, director of the MUI.

£186.20Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Band - Ronald Binge
Ronald Binge was born on 15 July 1910 at Derby, England. He studied harmony and counterpoint on his own and tried his hand at arranging and composing during the many years he worked as a pianist and musician in movie theatres. In 1934 he met the conductor of Italian descent Annunzio Paolo Mantovani (1905-1980) and started writing numerous arrangements for the symphony orchestra of this very popular conductor. In fact, Binge is the inventor of the famous 'Mantovani Sound' (with echo effects by the strings) which charmed and pleased millions of music lovers and television spectators all over Europe in the fifties and sixties. In 1952 he scored a hit with ' Elisabethan Serenade'. Binge also wrote classical music and even a series of wind band compositions such as the most popular 'Cornet Carillon'. Ronald Binge died on 6 September 1979 at Ringwood. He dedicated his Concerto for Alto Saxophone (1956) to the famous American saxophone virtuoso Sigurd Rascher (1907-2001), the pioneer of the classical saxophone. At the request of the Dutch wind band publisher Pieter Jan Molenaar, Binge wrote a version for symphonic band. Unfortunately both the editor and the composer died some time later in 1979 and could not attend the premiere of this version by the Dutch Royal Marine Band conducted by Jaap Koops and with Johan Perik as soloist. The concerto consists of three parts. In the dynamic and quick 'Allegro Spirituoso' one can hear the melody alternately with the soloist and the accompanying band. The second part is more lyrical, though passionate as well and it is better known as it is often performed on itself under its title 'Romance'. The final part 'Rondo Allegro Giocoso' is written in rondo form as its title indicates and it allows the soloist to demonstrate his virtuosity in a very lively dialogue with he band.

A Time There Was, was composed after being commissioned by the Trumpet Corps of the Royal Dutch Military Police. The piece is chorale like in character and was initially intended for memorial like concerts. It is also suitable as a quiet interlude in your concert. At the end of the piece the opening of the Dutch hymn "Hours, Days, Months, Years" is quoted, referring to the transient nature of existence.
