The premiere of Riverdance took place on April 30, 1994 during a seven-minute pause in the Eurovision Song Contest at the Point Theatre, Dublin. Composer Philip Sparke is fascinated by the early history of the American west, in particular the incredible expedition undertaken by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who were despatched by President Thomas Jefferson in the first decade of the nineteenth century to map the headwaters of the Missouri River and establish a route to the Pacific: a two-year journey that led them across the uncharted Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Big Sky Overture depicts the vastness and beauty of this area and will bring a feel of the Wild West to any concert.

£267.99Between the Two Rivers - Philip Sparke
Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare 'Prins Hendrik', from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire.

Mark Twain's colorful characters come to musical life in "A Tom Sawyer Portrait!" The journey begins in St. Petersburg, Missouri, with a jaunty musical portrayal of Tom and Huck and a ragtime sequence which depicts the sleepy river town. An Americana-style ballad follows that is tender, lyrical and poignant. This segues into a "no holds barred" blues section representing the mighty Mississippi. The Portrait concludes with our heroes' return, featuring a recap of the opening theme augmented in the brass and accompanied by woodwind runs and exciting percussion. 'Biberussa', the old name of the small town of Beverst in Belgium, is a combination of the words 'biber' and 'ussa', meaning beaver and river. This concert march was composed for the 100th anniversary of the Koninklijke Harmonie (Royal Concert Band) 'Ons Verlangen' from Beverst, a place where the composer had his first musical training. After the opening passage, a proud, heroic theme is heard. As a contrast, it is followed by a simple chorale melody and both themes then appear simultaneously in a grand tutti passage. This is followed by a cantabile trio with a majestic reprise of the main theme bringing the work to a close.

A Bamberg Fantasy - Ben Haemhouts
Bamberg has a population of approximately 70.000 people, a city not far from Bayreuth, famous for its Bayreuth Festspiele. The River Regnitz , the historic buildings, and the famous orchestra Bamberg Symphoniker are the source of inspiration for A Bamberg Fantasy. Following the opening, with its beautiful melodies played by different sections, the mood suddenly changes into an allegro ritmico in the minor key with rythmical elements and dynamic harmonics. In the finale, changes in time signature add a flowing character to this composition.
