"Black Death, Bonaparte and the End of the Monarchy" refer to other dark moments in history. Far off trumpets play hints of the Marseillaise and the old Austrian Imperial anthem. A silent witness observes these events; the ruins of the castle Finkenstein.

Spooky's Day Off was a big hit from the Rotterdam Soul Band, Swinging Soul Machine with singer Iwan "Spooky" Groeneveld. During the recording sessions Spooky took a free day, and the band recorded this purely instrumental number "Spooky's Day Off" which then spent 14 weeks in the Top 40 in 1969. James Kennedy arranged this swinging version for wind band.

Hancock claimed that the song was built his childhood memories from Chicago. "I still remember the song of the watermelon man when he drove his wagon around our neighborhood. The wheels of the wagon played the rhythm on the cobblestones."
