Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse.

The Fair Field Overture - Malcolm Arnold
The Fairfield Halls are built on the site of Croydon's old fair field and the music is rather reminiscent of a huge switchback ride in three-four time interspersed with a sprightly two-four prelude which seems to depict the general jollity of the fair ground. The main tune then expands to three-two time making for a grandiose finale. The general structure of the music is based on the chord of the major seventh which produces an interesting hurdy-gurdy effect.

VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent festive suite was written by Kevin Norbury for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Wind Symphony and features three well known carols set in a Renaissance style. Three contrasting movements comprise the work: i. Processional (Personent hodie - On this day earth shall ring) This is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material. ii. Pastorale (Quem pastores laudavere - Shepherds sang their praises o'er him) This is a 14th-century melody which was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. iii. Celebration! (In dulci jubilo - In sweet celebration - Ding-dong merrily on high) This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S. Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In dulci jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. This is an arrangement of carols associated with Christmas night. The main song in this arrangement is O Holy Night but it also includes the opening phrase of Franz Gruber's Silent Night as an accompanying motif. The music starts with some lux argentum and then two horns play It came upon the midnight clear as a prelude to the main theme. The first iteration of this beautiful Christmas song should ideally be played on the cor anglais. However, it is cued for oboe or trumpet should a cor anglais not be available.O Holy Night was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847, originally set to a French poem, Minuit, Chretiens (Midnight, Christians) and published as Cantique de Noel.Duration: 5.00
