Of Noble Courage is majestic in flavor, capturing the very essence of noblity and dignity. Similar in character to the ceremonial music used in Great Britain, the stately thematic material reflects the rich history of British tradition. It can be performed either as a festival or concert selection and is also extremely useful as prelude music for any important ceremony. Opening with a resounding fanfare, the music that follows is elegant in character; music befitting a procession of dignitaries in the manner of Pomp and Circumstance. If used as a procession, there are opportunities for repeats to use as needed.

This grand work contains four contrasting movements. The first movement, Prelude, takes the form of an overture: it raises the curtains and marks the beginning of the piece. The brilliant motifs of the opening are contrasted by a calmer and more lyrical central section, after which the triumphant opening returns for the movement's end. The second movement, Meditation, explores the intimate sounds of the oboe, as well as those of the flute and French horn, backed by a rich orchestral accompaniment. The third movement presents a more upbeat Procession, but not a Procession of the Nobles, as written by Rimsky-Korsakov. Quite the opposite, Procession resembles a "second line"procession from New Orleans, whose up-beat rhythms invite everyone to dance in the streets rather than the measured pacing of a march. Divertimento ends with a Hoedown, the tradition American folk dance idiom, when the band has the opportunity for both vivacity and virtuosity and may play as fast as it can. It is important to play all four movements with precision, clarity and, most importantly, enthusiasm.

Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse.

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. The Symphonic Prelude in C minor is an orchestral composition from the circle of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. The unearthing of this work, discovered shortly after World War II, has created confusion, leading to a second, reduced version being attributed to Gustav Mahler, a theory which still holds sway in musical circles today, although there is a high probability that the original composition is indeed by Bruckner himself. Rudolf Krzyzanowski (1895-1911), a pupil of Bruckner, transcribed the score in 1876. The 43-page manuscript bears the inscription Rudolf Krzyzanowski cop. 1876 on the first page; while on the last page is written in blue pencil: By Anton Bruckner. Thomas Doss used a facsimile of this autograph copy as the basic of his instrumentation of the prelude for symphonic wind orchestra.Duration: 6.15

Includes: Prelude, Theme and Five VariationsUnlike my other pieces for concert band, Mockbeggar Variations has no roots in any of my work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, but resulted from a commission by Robert Roscoe for the Berkshire Youth Wind Orchestra, with funds provided by the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust. Robert, on learning that I was stuck for a suitable title, and noting my penchant for the unusual, suggested the address of the Trust - Mockbeggar House - might take my fancy.The Prelude hints at the melodic and harmonic material of the Theme, which appears in the thirty-first bar, distributed between various solo instruments and small groups of players. The five succeeding variations are contrasted in mood, tempo, style and instrumentation.A large part of the score was written in a chalet high in the Swiss Alps with a continual clangour of sixteen different pitches of cow bell constantly ringing in my ears. There is no Mahlerian hint of this in the music, nor was my wife, Jane, successful in shooing the cows away or muffling their bells.....! - GW
