It was his charming wife Raphale, a fine harpist, who drew Serge Lancen's attention to the harp. He has written various works for this instrument, such as: 'Pour Raphale', 'Duo Concertant' for harp and flute, 'Crpuscule' for two harps, 'Concerto Champtre' for solo harp and chamber orchestra, and many pieces in a lighter vein for harp quintet and this Harp Concerto. The initial cadenza was inspired by Camille Saint-Sans Second Piano Concerto a work which Serge Lancen studied as a young boy. The Harp Concerto can be played with a symphonic band, a string orchestra or the piano.This work, dedicated to his wife, was premiered in July 1990 during the First Le Havre International Wind Band Festival , by Marie-Pierre Cochereau and the Le Havre Municipal Symphonic Band, conducted by Philippe Langlet.

Trois Rag-Caprices - Darius Milhaud
The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a member of the 'Groupe des Six'. This group of six composers gathering Honegger, Poulence, Auric, Durey, Tailleferre and Milhaud, imitated Erik Satie by revolting against the deeply rooted traditional conventions of that time. They reacted against impressionism (Debussy) and romanticism (Wagner, Mahler) and felt very strongly about the music of Satie and Strawinsky. Milhaud's most popular work is undoubtedly the ballet 'La Cration du Monde', one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The premire at the 'Th?tre des Champs Elyses' in October 1923 caused a real scandal with the Paris public.The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for piano were composed one year earlier, in the summer of 1922, and could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for 'La Cration du monde'. There are indeed clear similarities between both compositions as to the rhythmical and harmonic aspects. The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. The same happened to 'Saudades do Brasil' (1920), a piano composition punctuated with Latin-American influences, which was written after his stay in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) exactly as his ballet 'Le Boeuf sur le Toit'. Johan de Meij's orchestration of 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for symphonic band is a most welcome addition next to the original band works of Milhaud, such as 'Suite Fran?aise' (1945) and 'West Point Suite' (1951).

These three movements for piano and band depict three stages of a musical journey. We set off on a long journey through the world of musical virtuosity in the style of Liszt : grand, lustrous and lyrical. The second stage is a peaceful stroll, the start of a dream. The colours are like a tender caress and the piano sketches transparent arabesques. This splendid impressionistic journey ends in two bright pink drops which evapore just in time before the third and last movement explodes.The last movement is driven forward by a raging rhythm, as relentless as a war-dance. Omaggio was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concert band premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de msica de Mlaga. The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, FANTASIA, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the band (piano), which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, BALLAD, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The third movement, THE KING TRIUMPHANT, pays homage to Steven's late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex's name ('Rex' being Latin for 'king') as well as his love of Eric Ball's Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close.

He explores the wide palette of resources that a wind band offers and the possibilities of each single instrumentalist; instead of a big sound mass he designed it as a big ensemble. He used the specific combinations of the concert band forces in order to achieve a real band sound without changing anything to the original.

£116.40Rapsodie sur des Themes Normands - Serge Lancen
The Paris born composer and pianist Serge Lancen (1922-2005) studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town and was awarded a Prix de Rome. Lancen composed symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos.In 1960 he met his ancient study friend Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band, who incited him to write for symphonic band. Lancen wrote an impressive series of wind band works that earned him an international reputation. Among his most successful compositions are Manhattan Symphony (1962) an Cape Kennedy (1970), but we should not forget that Lancen also wrote several fine works for symphonic bands of average level. So he did in 1976 by writing two rhapsodies based respectively on Breton and Normandy themes. The Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy was recorded in 1977 on a long playing record by the French National Police Band conducted by Pierre Bigot alongside with Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Hymne la Musique and Rapsodie sur des Thmes Breton. Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy is a piece that is characterized by an original orchestration and fluent melodic lines, two main characters of Lancen's music.

Commissioned by Japan's Central Air Self Defense Force BandWhen I received this commission, I thought of a regular piece for wind band, but as my preparations continued I heard so much about the band's outstanding trumpeter Kenichi Kurisu that I ended up writing a concerto for him. The Self Defense Force audience includes those without much chance to otherwise hear live music. With that in mind I realized I also had the challenge of creating a melody that was compelling.Using the classical sonata as a model I made this song with simple movements and included a signature chorus in the middle section. Although this piece is performed with band, a version for piano accompaniment was created by pianist Orimo Manabu for the 20th Anniversary of "The Trumpet Concert."This edition of Trumpet Concerto was offered for an American Premier at the 2013 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, Robert Sullivan soloist with the Kagoshima Joho High School Wind Orchestra.(Satoshi Yagisawa)

James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Strong rhythmic playing is required from all sections of the band in order to achieve a solid performance. A Royal PortraitThis piece is very regal in style and portrays all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds a high-profile state occasion. It is to be performed with a full, warm sound and players must resist the temptation to overblow as this could have a detrimental effect on tone quality and intonation. As with Buffalo Rock, the instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register.
