Agathe Backer Grndahl's 'Ballade' can best be described as a Romantic character piece. Such one-movement piano pieces with titles that loosely indicate a mood/idea made out a central genre in the 19th century. In Backer Grndahl's production, several of these are grouped under the term 'fantasy pieces'. There are six collections with a total of 48 fantasy pieces on her opus list and 'Ballade' is from the first of these (Op. 36), published in 1895. 'Ballade' is a broader work than the other fantasy pieces. It is built around a dramatic theme that keeps returning after episodes with strongly contrasting thematic material.The arrangement is close to Backer Grndahl's original composition. It is transposed a semitone down: from E flat minor to D minor. The arrangement contains some challenging passages and is well-suited for amateur bands of a certain level. The instrumentation makes no special demands beyond normal concert band instrumentation and will sound just as good in small as in large bands.

Thanks to the low grade of difficulty of this piece this it is possible to play in a 'real band' after only a few lessons. In 1946, George Walker was still doing graduate work at the Curtis institute when he composed Lyric for Strings, which would prove over the coming decades to become one of the most performed and enduring string orchestra works of the 20th Century. This first-ever edition for symphonic wind band was arranged by Dr. Luci Disano and premiered by The President's Own United States Marine Band on August 24, 2022. George Walker (June 27, 1922 - August 23, 2018) began his groundbreaking career as a young piano virtuoso and was admitted to Oberlin College on a scholarship following his first public recital at the age of 14. Graduating with the highest honors in his Conservatory class, he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, becoming the first black graduate of this renowned music school. His works demonstrate a wide range of artistic excellence in genres ranging from instrumental and vocal solos and chamber music to compositions for orchestra and other large ensembles. He is the first black composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

The arrangements and compositions in these books were written by Adrian Taylor for various beginner or school bands that he has conducted over the years. Children joined these bands on the 2nd parts, usually having only been playing for a year and they then progressed to the 1st parts the following year.This volume of music was orchestrated a little differently to the other volumes but the easiest parts for each instrument continue to be written without key signatures in treble clef, in B flat major for bass clef trombone and euphonium and in E flat major for bass clef tuba. More advanced parts are written with the appropriate key signatures for each piece, reflecting the greater understanding and skills of the players on these parts. Most of the pieces can be played with only a few parts being covered, the addition of the other parts usually enhancing the arrangement rather than simply doubling existing musical lines. The essential parts are the Trumpet (and Clarinet or Cornet) parts, the two Trombone/Euphonium parts and in No. 4, the 1st Horn part. A piano part helps to fill out the harmonies where other parts are missing. The brass parts in the wind band versions are identical to those in the brass versions. This volume was created so that beginner players can play Calypso and When The Saints, which feature in Just Play... Book 1, accompanied by their school band.

Poem, originally for flute and piano, composed by Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884 - 1920). This wind ensemble arrangement is designed to make this composition playable by most high school clarinetists and instrumentalists. Please note that the B-flat instruments are written with a key signature of 3 flats, not one of six sharps. This was done to keep the clarinets playing in a familiar key with ample accidentals to ease the reading of the parts. The bass clarinets and the bassoons play identical parts and can be substituted or augmented as desired. Though a minimum of two double bassists is ideal, an alternate part for tuba is also provided (also divisi).
