This excellent overture was written for the TCU Wind Ensemble. Heroic in character, the piece masterfully exploits the variety of colors available to the modern wind ensemble through interesting solis and solos. This piece is tonal in nature and contains many original and identifiable themes.

Masquerade Suite was composed by Johan Halvorsen, one of the best-kept secrets of Norway. Not only was he an accomplished violinist and conductor, but also he was among the most prominent Norwegian composers in the generation following Edvard Grieg. His compositions develop the national Romantic tradition of his friends Grieg and Svendsen, but his was a distinctive style marked by brilliant orchestration inspired by the French Romantic composers. The original version of Masquerade Suite had nine movements. Paul Noble has selected five of the most suitable movements for band transcription and grouped them into this beautiful suite. The U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. gave the premiere performance of this work. The first movement, Holberg Overture, sets the mood, pace, and musical themes for the entire suite, with rousing opening themes, followed by a grand fugue in the development section. This is clearly a piece for accomplished bands, giving all wind players a real workout. Each of the succeeding movements has a distinctive style, making the suite a significant addition to the repertoire of the Concert Band. Especially noteworthy is the Arietta, the easiest of the movements, and can easily stand alone with its haunting flute and oboe melodies and dramatic crescendo, the crisp solos in the Molinasque, and the final movement, which is very much like a circus march, fast, lively and short!

Acclaimed French composer Albert Roussel is known today for his famous pupils, Erik Satie and Edgard Varese, as well as for his own marvelous works. This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra's name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for its warmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa's typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert.Duration: 5.15

Uplifting and bright, this fine overture was written for the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds. Images of flight are suggested through the composer's use of rhythm and tempo. The middle section has solo lines for trumpet and clarinet and is beautifully scored utilizing the many different colours available to the wind medium. Majesty is a powerful and spectacular overture. Right from the start, the brass open the work brilliantly before making way for a majestic hymn mostly played by the woodwind. The end of the piece repeats the opening fanfare as a monumental finale in the style of an American symphonic march. This work was commissioned by the Bourbourg Wind Orchestra (France), conducted by Claude Deconinck, on the occasion of its 230th anniversary. This piece was premiered by the commissioning orchestra on 19 November 2022, just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Naturally, this work is dedicated to her.Duration: 6.15

The overture to Giuseppe Verdi's 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. In this imaginative work for winds, Jay Bocook pays homage to the mastery of Verdi and begins with the ominous 3-note fate theme from the overture. Throughout the piece melodies are recast and harmonies are embellished, culminating in an exhilarating conclusion where the final seven bars quote Verdi's original almost identically. A brilliant addition to the wind band repertoire.
