The French composer Daniel Fran?ois Esprit Auber (1782-1871) witnessed many important developments in the history of music ? from Luigi Cherubini to Richard Wagner. His extensive output consisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of these are still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The story concerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The Bartered Bride Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The Bartered Bride (Czech: Prodan? nev??sta, The Sold Fianc?e) is the second opera, a comedy in three acts, by Bed?ich Smetana. The Czech libretto was written by Karel Sabina, who had also written the libretto for Brandenburgers in Bohemia. Composed in 1863-1866, the work was originally envisioned as an operetta, a light opera with spoken dialogue in place of sung recitatives. It was first performed in this form in 1866 in Prague. The definitive version of the work, now an opera buffa, was finished in 1870 and was performed the same year. The opera's overture and three dances are part of the orchestral repertoire. 06:30

Commissioned to commemorate its 20th anniversary season, this work was written for the Nebraska Wind Symphony, Omahas community band, in 1997. It is in traditional overture form, with a bold introductory theme in the horns answered by the trumpets. The material that follows presents the main theme in solo voices followed by the entire band. Contrasting material follows, leading to a recapitulation and eventually to a jubilant coda. While not intentionally programmatic, the title of the work does reflect the bands geographic location.

The opera or 'farsa comica' in one act 'La Scala di Seta' (The Silken Ladder) by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was first performed at the 'San Mois' theatre in Venice on 9 May 1812. It is the story of the beautiful Giulia whose guardian wants her to marry a rich young man. However, Giulia is already married to a young man who climbs every night into her room by means of a silken ladder. In the splendid overture of this opera Rossini gave an important part to the wind ensemble. This classic of the early 19th century repertoire has been most skilfully and enthusiastically arranged for wind band by Lorenzo della Fonte.
